In this tutorial we model a cartoon style fish based on a sketch using polygon and subpatch modeling techniques. We also lay out the UV’s for the model i the final parts.
We start by loading in our backdrop with the sketch and work on matching the shape with the reference. Here you'll learn a good work flow for modeling organics, keeping four sided polygons on the model and working with subpatches gradually adding more resolution to the geometry as we go along. We use a number of different modeling tools such as smoothshift, drag, bandsaw pro and extender as we make the body fins and head, look at symmetry and how to avoid pinching in organic models.
This tutorial also looks closely at how to create eyelids that are suitable for blinking and how to build an eyeball with component parts like iris that can be rigged and animated for rolling eyes on any character. The final two parts cover some basic UV layout in the UV texture editor and checking for common problems that can occur like stretching and overlapping in the fin areas of the fish.
This tutorial continues in the animation section with Cartoon Fish Volume 2 - Rigging and Posing where we animate the fish and go over creating a basic underwater environment with particles in Lightwave.
