This is a tutorial about product design and how to model, light and render for accurate product visualizations in advertisement. In the nine hours long series of videos we cover the complete process from concept to final product. The first twelve parts focus on modeling and from there we continue with texturing, lighting and rendering. The final cell phone model will render print resolution images with no facet edges showing.
We start off with setting up backdrops in Lightwave for a cell phone and work with a number of reference images from different angles. Using subdivision modeling techniques and a combination of tools we work to create and maintain shape which can be a challenging but this tutorial walks you through the process step by step. Subdivisions have several advantages over traditional polygons including level of detail options and lower polygon counts.
Gradually we build up geometry to get the detail we need for creating an accurate product model cutting out and aligning surfaces, adding buttons, display screens and rubber stoppers. With the model done we parent the different objects and set up controls for rotation of the flip cover on the cell phone.
We continue onto lighting and shading for our product model, create a basic three-point lighting setup with area lights to test render materials and create the textures for buttons and display screens. Here you'll learn how to add logos and numbers to your textures in Photoshop and work with alpha channels and transparency. We spend time on getting nice materials and the right silver metallic look with proper reflections, and add bump maps certain parts of the model for better realism. We also use some different types of procedural noise to break up the surfaces. When the basic look of the model and the materials is good we set up better lighting and tweak things to render out some really nice final product shots of the cell phone.
