This is a great beginner tutorial for users who are new to Lightwave. We start off in the first part with going through some interface basics, common keyboard shortcuts and modeling tools, as well as some useful Lightwave plug-ins in and how they can be installed. This part is free and can be streamed as a tutorial sample below.
From here we move onto building the amazing Marwin character from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy using curved geometry and subpatch modeling techniques to get organic shapes. Subpatching can be a bit tricky but this tutorial will put you off to a great start in this field. Some of the tools used are bevel, extender, stretch, bandsaw pro and knife tool with which we create clean surface geometry for our robot character.
With the Marwin model complete we take him into Layout for surfacing and lighting, work on getting some nice metallic materials and create reflections. We also make some letters in the same cartoon style as our character that we add to our final render. Most renders need some post-processing so we spend the last few minutes of this tutorial in Photoshop looking at how you can increase contrast and get a cleaner image.
