Fantasy Balloon Ship Hard Surface Modeling
This modeling venture in Lightwave 9.6 tutorial is a great project for a more experienced modeler. The twelve hour long series of project based videos will take you through the complete process of creating the ship you can see above and will give you the opportunity to really excel in terms of detail orientated hard surface modeling.
In this tutorial we will focus on the modeling and rendering of an air ship inside of Lightwave. We work with only one reference image from a three quarter perspective, rather than the more traditional three images. This is a very useful skill to acquire in 3D work as you won't always have multiple reference images to work with, and modeling like this based on a single reference like this can be quite challenging. It also allows you a greater degree of artistic freedom within the project and this is a must have technique for a modeler working from concept art, something commonly done in the industry.
Everything in this tutorial is covered using the standard Lightwave native tools and does not require the use of any plug-ins. Some very useful tips and tricks will be talked about, such as modeling chain links, adding knots to the nets, and how to go about making the model really come alive in terms of adding fine detail.
In the final part we cover how to do an ambient occlusion render in order to bring out the fine detail in this model and display it nicely while it’s still untextured. This rendering technique is very useful for faking better lighting on detailed models of this type.
