This is a project for guitar enthusiasts where we model a Fender Stratocaster complete with all the bells and whistles. The final renders for this model textured and lit were published in Expose, which showcases the finest digital art, so if you’re interested in mastering high detail modeling for photorealism this is the perfect tutorial for you. The first part where we create the curved base for the guitar body with the is free and can be streamed in the window below.
We start off by creating some curve based geometry following references of the shape and working with the pen tool to get a close match, and from here we move onto the neck, headstock, pickguard, pickups, strings and some extensive detail work to get all the bits and bobs that make up this amazing guitar model. The tutorial covers a number of different modeling styles and techniques in Lightwave and as such it's a great project for getting some real in-depth knowledge on polygon, subpatch and spline modeling. You'll learn how to create clean surfaces, cut out holes in geometry, make lettering, spirals, screws and bolts and bring all the highly detailed elements together to make up the final model.
This series continues with Stratocaster Volume 2 - Photorealistic Texturing and Lighting where we complete this project. The second volume also contains the .lwo file with the model and a bonus track where Philip shows you how to create the exact render that was included in Expose.
