In this fun beginner project in Lightwave we create a cartoon style space scene based on a concept sketch with a gold rocket, moon, planet earth and stars. The tutorial covers modeling, surfacing, shading, lighting and some very basic effects to get fire coming off the rocket tail.
We start off in Modeler creating the moon with craters and planet earth before we move onto the rocket ship. Here we use some different tools like bandsaw pro, array, point clone plus and copy and paste to get the numerous bolts on the surface of the ship. We also create the stylized windows with surrounding rivets and then start with texturing the scene.
During these parts we use weight maps for graduated surfaces, bring the different elements together into a nice composition and paint some interesting backgrounds for our scene in Photoshop. We work with procedural textures, specular reflections on metallic materials and bump maps for irregular surfaces like the moon craters.
For the lighting portion of this tutorial we practice at aiming and placing a number of different lights in the scene, adjust our shading to get nice reflections from our planetary surface and create a glowing star sky with lens flare. Finally we create a particle emitter for the fire flame of the rocket.
