Create a cool looking space craft complete with textures in this SimplyLightwave project. The tutorial is highly detailed and done in a slow pace, as such it is a great project for those of you who are fairly new to Lightwave. Here you'll get a good overview modeling, surfacing, UV layout, texturing and rendering without trying to do too much at once.
We start off in the first part with going over some basics keyboard shortcuts, setting up backdrops and working in polygon and subpatch mode. Following our reference images we create the U.S.S. Defiant piece by piece pulling points and using a combination of tools in Modeler to cut surfaces, make holes in the geometry and align the component parts. This will give you some good practice in hard surface modeling and keeping four sided polygons for a clean model.
We continue with surfacing and create texture maps, here you'll learn to assign surfaces to your model and some good techniques for unwrapping UV's. We bring in some pre-made textures that we assign to our model, as well as work with procedural textures for variation in our surfaces. We also look at lighting and materials explaining in detail how things like specular reflections, gradients and incidence angle work before we finish off with rendering out some different shots of the final textured model.
