Here is a wee pic of the lighting set-up im workin on. the darts i told u i modelled earlier, well these are used to help keep the wires along the roof, below u can se the bit ive done and how it will eventually look, it will be hot-wired into the main power of the house, im thinking there will be 3 lights. I want this scene very dark, but still light enough to see all of the toys. id like this scene to be somthin ppl will enjoy playing throu a few times to see how many different classic toys they can find. Im also goin to be hiding a photo of myself somewhere in this opening scene, im not saying were..... :p LOL inspired by - Wheres Wally :attn:

lol.
cool.
Very interesting.

R4s1n 31-01-2006 09:50 PM

Definately awesome!
What's the polycount here?

davie563 02-02-2006 03:59 PM

1 Attachment(s)
i think the poly count has hit 380,000 polys, so once there imported into layout, some of the models will freze, so im not sure about in lightwave :( im scared to check LOL

Here is a we texture update

R4s1n 02-02-2006 10:52 PM

Do you make the models as Bounding Boxes in Layout? That's what i usually do to keep LW from getting too bogged up with SubD's.

Peter Murphy 03-02-2006 04:27 AM

It really depends what he is modelling.

But in general its never a good idea to start off with a box and just keep subdividing into it. You'll end up with a huge poly mesh. You should be chopping, cutting into it. Adding polys and mending areas. Beveling, smooth shifting the little areas etc.

It looks great fraser. Some renders of objects wouldnt go a miss. I'd like to see them rendered out instead of the screen grabs. This way we can see your true potential of texturing. Cant really tell from the modeler shots.

KrisYoung1980 03-02-2006 09:15 AM

I think what R4s1n meant was the 'display as bounding box' option in layout which allows you to work with high poly objects quickly as it doesnt display the object on screen, just its bounding box. Doesn't actually have anything to do with the way you model it, but good tips there never-the-less...

P.S. Pogs or Tazos - discuss. ;)

here are some more toys textured, i added some actual renders, u will see more of these when i actually start lighting the final scene...

JohnD5000 03-02-2006 04:13 PM

Nice, the blue on R2's "face" looks a bit too light though. Should it not be the same as the other blues?

R4s1n 03-02-2006 05:17 PM

>.< guess i should have explained it a bit more....

davie563 03-02-2006 05:53 PM

ok, im not posting any more renders, these are just 2min quick renders to let u see the thing in the flesh and the bump maps aswell, i havent got the colour or anythin right yet, because they will be changed the min they go into the final scene ........

Ill get some renders up once i start on the final scene

Hi, here is my logo design for my animation, im starting to think of possible intro animation using the following design, was just wondering if anybody had any particualr ideas when they looked at it as to how it could be animated, nice to hear what u guys think, might give me a few ideas :p

Cheers

JohnD5000 03-02-2006 09:04 PM

Got no idea, maybe could burst out of a toy box or a pile of toys.
Yeah I meant to say the bump maps on R2 are good.

davie563 03-02-2006 09:22 PM

ok, here is a we render of my postman pat toy car. This was a fav of mine when i was very young :p

Got it all worn and rugged, i think this will be in darkness but ill deffinatly highlight it with a we point light, id like this toy to be seen :P

Render is small i know, just a wee quicky

Lookin good, although might I sugest the corners are a bit sharp? I'd sugest cutting it up like so, and subpatching.

davie563 04-02-2006 01:40 AM

1 Attachment(s)
cheers john, i thought i might have gotten away with that, but seein as u spotted it 1st time, i fixed the car :p

When i smoothed it i had trouble with the textures, all of them are fixed except the bonnet joining up with the windscreen, ill need to fine tune this a wee bit more to get a nice smooth transition.

Other than that im pretty happy, il leave the texture adjustments till ive lit the final scene, dont want to waste time on somthin that i might get away with ;)

KrisYoung1980 04-02-2006 01:57 AM

If you've still got the old version of the model, I'd suggest using rounder to sort out your corners rather than cutting and sub-patching, its a much cleaner way to deal with simple objects...

davie563 04-02-2006 01:59 AM

well, that would have been a great tip if u had told me before i did it the other way :shakehead

Ucckk well, its done now

JohnD5000 04-02-2006 01:45 PM

Yeah a young kid would have his eye out with the old corners.
I think it looks a lot better now anyway, the roundeness makes it look a lot more realistic. And I think makes the textures even look better.
I don't know if your crease problem is that much of a problem. It isn't that noticible and as the room's going to be in a fair bit of darkness and the toy probably in the background of the scene it shouldn't be noticable. Even if as you say the Postman Pat toy is going to be illuminated more.
P.S. I'd have suggested rounder if I'd heard of it! ;)

davie563 04-02-2006 02:05 PM

cheers john, yeah the textures do look better, expecially the chips is the corners :p

Here is a texture im workin on the now for a torn comic page, this will be under the crash dummies car, and will slowley dissolve as it reaches the centre walk-path, sorta as if its worth from beeing walked on alot :p

Still a work in progress along with the rest of the texture :p

The sqwiggles u can see on the ground are a rough marking of where the objects lyin the the scene, they will also help act as a layer of dirt that surrounds most objects. I think ill bee startin on the actual lighting for the scene 2morrow, then il know what parts of the texture need to be brighter and darker ect...

Cheers

spent the last wee while getting everything into position....

This is just a we tease of the opening shot, ill give away more once i get textures on the thing :p

Peter Murphy 05-02-2006 01:25 AM

Nice fraser. Like your postman pat toy. Its came along well.

However I'm not totally sold on your comic image. If the image had been trampled on quite so ofen it wouldn't look so clean. I can see what you are trying to do. But the comic itself will have suffered wear and tear. Right now it's too clean a merge. I suggest desaturating the colours of your image in photoshop and putting dirt trails on it. That would help alot.

A little bit of ruffness in a bump map, like it's been scuffed would be nice too.

davie563 05-02-2006 02:20 PM

cheers, well the bit of the comic that is clean wont have been trampled on, the clean bit is underneath the crashdummies car roof, its only the part where its starts to fade and wear that is on the walkway, i think ill add a dust layer to it thou, this was really just a test at the actual look of the fade and tear map i created. Im pretty happy with that. I think ill burn some of the colours thou.

yo !

Been workin on the lights a bit, for some reason im not getting a glow on my lights :(

I have luminosity and glow intensity up at 100%, but nothin....

Could it be the glass case that sourounds it that is stopping the glow, if so.... is there a way around this, ive seen lights done in lighwave that have a glow coming from the centre and they are incased in glass

Any help would be great

Cheers

hi, after alot of tweeking, ive decided to go with slightly duller lights with softer glows, i also want the scene to be darker, here is a workin rough, im going to add highlights and sparks to the final wires.

I also need to model the thickness to the floorboards to make the hole more noticable

Just thought id post a wee render, give u guys a wee look

Cheers

here are some black and white renders. Im considering doing somthin with Night Vision so here are some tests of how it would look :p

KrisYoung1980 08-02-2006 05:36 PM

Looks VERY nice - I'm not sure if its the right style for your story though - up to you really! You got your characters going yet?

davie563 08-02-2006 06:26 PM

hi, i was thinking of making my animation all from the view of a handy-cam, u know i'll have a we flashing red record logo at the bottom and stuff, then as it goes into the darkness under the floor, i was going to have Night-Vision wipe in like a transition so u can see all the stuff, and then when it goes down into there living quaters u will se it slowley fade back to colour.

Well, the plan is to have this scene all lit and textured, im about level with the bike the now, in terms of progress, so i have about 12toys to texture, everything is just projedural work, i know they prob would be dirty but i also want the toys seen by the audience, so ill play about a bit.

Hopefully come monday it will be characters for a week or so :p Realling looking forward to getting them started.. ;)

JohnD5000 09-02-2006 11:06 AM

Maybe security cameras instead of steady cam? Without the wee record logo. Who's meant to be filming it?

davie563 09-02-2006 01:12 PM

ehh, i wasnt really goin into much detail about whos filmimg it ect... it was just going to be a more interesting way of producing it, i guess u could say it is 1 of those we spy camera, or simply just a fly on the wall shot...

I just wanted to make the shot go to nightvivsion because i love the grey-scale quality of the renders in the dark, the contrast between shades of blacks and greays has a very impressive result.

Ill think about it some more,

JohnD5000 09-02-2006 07:22 PM

If you really wanna do it greyscale you don't need to come up with an excuse like it's a camera or a fly, you just do it cos you think it's a better effect than the colour. You could even add a tint of colour to the shot maybe a red or blue but still in a greyscale manner and say the lights are coloured.
People have strange lighting all the time just to convay mood, they don't need to explain where it's coming from.
