The big step to normal! Go bullet :D I like the idea of the frill around its neck. We have a lizard in australia called a frilly necked lizard. here are some urls that show some shots of the frill, may help you get the right feel.
http://www.doaustralia.com/Fauna/FrilledLizard.htm http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin-...re/frilled.htm and 1 more image. i hope this is helpful. |
thank you ozwolf for the links!!!! never knew their was some kind of lizard with neckfrills!!! its for sure i go use this links and i probably going to make the frills again to let it look like better!!! maybe it looks better when i make it not as a different part but just attach it to the head!! so i will try that!!!
thanks again!!! guestion: should i use double sided polygons to get that membrane-ish look??? or should i just make it a solid mesh like i have now at the moment??? updates coming soon!!!! |
 looking good

thanks puppet!!
here is an improved neckfrill!!! i personally like this one more than the first one!!! tell me which you prefer more!! |
I think it looks good! Looks much better than the last...the edges look a bit thick, but I think once textures are added it won't look as apparent and perhaps it will look better that way. Lookin fantastic bullet, keep it going man!:D Oh, and how many lights do you have set up in your scene... I have the darndest time getting a good lighting and soft shadows set up in a scene. The pic even has a neat fuzzy effect to it.
|
thanks hopesfall!!! first i had flat edges on that neckthing!! but that didn't look good...so i decided to make them a little thicker!!
In the last render i have 2 lights!! one blue spotlight with 50% light intensity!! and another spotlight with a yellow color, also with 50% light intensity!!! and radiosity is turned on!! that is always given a cool soft effect to the renders!!! and dont forget to give it a shadow map!!! |
\thats looking great bullet. Just one question can you tell us about the shadow map you are talking about as your render is an effect i too have trouble try to achieve.
Your dino has heaps of individuality with the frill and bone on its nose keep up your good work. |
Sweet!!! Thanks for the tip! I love your renders... now meby mine can look half as good:D About the edges; I see what your talking about. I think your thickening was a move in the right direction... I can't wait to see it textured... your texturing thusfar has been primo stuff. Until next render... I wait eagerly:)
|
Excellent work there Bullet. Now, let's see some textures on that baby :)
|
thanks to all!!! first i will explain those soft-shadows!!
im sure i explained it before to someone...but dont know where!! has to be somewhere in someones others entry!!! well i will explain again, its not a problem!!! in layout open the light properties!! inthere click the 'shadow' tab!! change the 'Shadow type' to 'shadow map' ( this is only possible when 'light type' is set to 'Spotlight'. then you can give the 'Shadow Map Size' a value ( i almost give it everytime a value of 1024 or 2048 ). give Shadow Fuzziness a value of 2.0 ( dont know what is happening when set it to 3.0 or 4.0 or higher ( i never tryed that :) ). thats it!! about the texturing: first i will complete the arms and hands!! then i will texture that neck thing!!! also wants to add some more of that bone stuff i modelled in the legs and feet!! so when that is done!! i will go texture the stuff!!! next week i have to go back to school!!! so i will not have as many time to work on it, as i have now at the moment!!! but im sure i can get this one finished!! ( still more than a month to go :D )!! i probably will get even the time to make some surroundings!!! but that is not my goal at the moment...first i wants to finish my dino!!! |
Hey Bullet,
Don't hesitate to push the Shadow Fuzziness a little higher, I sometime set it to 10 or 20, but 6-8 usually. |
sweet thx for the info will give it a go tonight, and to cyroz for the added info.
|
thanks cyroz!!! i could know the higher the number the better it is :)!!
from now on i will set it higher!! |

oh and uuh...i think the modelling of the dinosaur is finished!!! added hands and some bone-stuff at his back!!! now I need some serious critic so i can fix the things you guys dont like!!!
if you need any other views, ask me!!! when everything is good, i begin starting to texture his body!!! |
cool, it looks great! as for crit the only thing i can think of is maybe adding a thumb or rotating the hands so that they hand down like T-rex hands. its up to you though i mean its a made up dinosaur so it could look exactly how you want it too ;)
|

thanks for the tip...not sure how to do the hands!!! i dont think i am going to add a thumb because dinosaurs dont needs to pick something up ( a thumb would be usefull for that :) ).
just using the hands for defending himself!!! maybe i am going to make the vingers a little bit thicker!! but i will look at that later!! now I have enabled the textures again and added a texture for that frill-thing!! it was hard to get that transparant skin effect!!! |
amazing textures overall. Good textures on the frilly skin thingy!
|
Woohoo bullet - that's one fine and dandy looking little dino there.
|
Bullet,
great dino....one of the few venturing create a dino that could have been instead of one that all ready exsisted. I know I am just a noob but, something doesnt look right with your top image where the arms connect to the body(shoulder area) like it may be to wide.....not sure exactly what it is....just looks strange. I cant wait til my skill improves enough so I can start competing. I am a true NOOB, never ever messed with this stuff before. i tried a little in Maya, but it was a borrowed program that didnt work most of the time. Lightwave seems to fit my style more and it is very user friendly....good luck in the contest Thomas Hazlett |
love the textureing :)
|
thanks all!!! working on the body texture now!!!
to OER48: thanks for the crit, i will see what i can do with the shoulder area!!propably it is hanging to low or something!!! |
Looking really good, there, Bullet! :)
I still think the fringe seems too wide at the edge. Keep going though, that can always be tweaked later. |
Coming along now bullet, different colours on the frill than i expected, i would move away from the colour your using on the body as frills are usually used to scare other creatures and as such would have brighter colours red and orange maybe.
Also it would be more transparent on lower half just enough so the light would show through. i would also look at modelling it to look less rigid. But no doubt you will refine things like this as you progress. |
thanks ozwolf and mckinley!!!
you are right about the color ozwolf!!! it should have another color than the rest of him!!! still working on the body now ( just messing around with the bump map ). when body is done i will change the frill's colors!!! so updates coming soon. |

ok here is the body texture...still not very happy with it!! it isn't looking like a skin that much!! also a little error where the leg joins the body!! going to fix that!!! just wanted to show you some progress!!!
|
Nice modeling skills. Good textures.
the back legs look a little bit like they are not compleaty set in right. maybe some muscle detail to show its conected to the body ? |
good job on the textures dude!!!
I have two crits. tho.... The frilly thingy seems to be facing too much frontward, if u noe what i mean... And the tail is a little too thin, i guess is needs more diameter or something like that. Hope this helps.:) other than that... good work!:) |
i agree with the tail but i think the frill should remain forward as thats what happens when it opens up. Fix what you said on the leg and it will look sweet.
Whats your thoughts on its environment? |
thank you all for the compliments and critics.
i am going to get a paper and note al the stuff you guys dont like!! so when i have finished the texturing i can get those things fixed!! im not sure about the environment yet!! i think it will be in a jungle where my dinosaur is guarding her eggs!! |
sorry for posting no updates... i need to do some stuff for school first!! when thats done i will go completing my dinosaur!!
just wanted to let you know im not quit the challenge :) |
tick tock ... ten days left, dont forget.:)
Dae |
lol dont be afraid dae!!! i have now some free days for school!!
so i can make time to work on it :) but yeah...you are right...time is going fast so i have to finish the last thing on my dinosaur!! im not sure though if i will use al those days for my dinosaur!! i also need to work on my school stuff!!! i tryed to make a skelegon for it some days ago!!! but there are some bugs... i know how to fix them though!! |
ok finally got the skelegon set right!!
i made a test animation to see how it would move. im pretty happy with it!! the head and frills are morphs. the legs, body, tail and arms are moved by bones!! its a 8 second long *.WMV file!!! next step: make a jungle where he lives!! EDIT: eugh...wait until i get the file smaller than 200 kb |
cant wait to see it.
Dae |

ok hope it will upload now!!
quality is low :( but well...you can see the animation now!! |
very nice moves there:tup:, i really like that frill flicker thingy you got going on there, one crit, change the current lighting rig to a three point light setup as it will lift the dino right out of the black background.
Dae:) |

thanks dae!!
ive started to put the dinos in their position!! i dont have an idea how dinosaur eggs look like, so i just made some modified spheres!! now i need to make some plants, and find a way to make grass!! |
looking gud bullet.
the way i made my grass was using saslite in lightwave, jsut av 2 tweek a few settings 2 get it like grass. |
yeah grass is easy with saslite, looks good, i am at work so i cant see the animation. Eggs are eggs dude so what you have would surfice, the jungle is gonna be the time killer.
Good work. |
