The Simply World Magazine

right I have finally had a good price on the cost of publishing a magazine

The magazine will be a 34 page mag / with high quality grain paper and will come complete with a cd - the mag will cover the 3 main sites we have up at this time

simplymaya
simplylightwave
simplyphotoshop

The book will have 34 pages to start and we will be printing only 5000 copies. A new issue will be released every 3 months.

the book will be split into equal parts covering the 3 different applications. There will be 2 interviews for each app as well as tutorials and general gossip. The cd will contain a couple of high quality models/ and tutorials for each application.

Right heres what I need to know.... I need to know if this is of interest to you guys - the book needs to be sold for around £4 a copy to make this work at all.

The book will only sell from the sites to start with and hopefully will grow into a shop release

How do you guys feel about this?

Thanks

I'll buy it. It's not a bad price considreing the average cost in the UK for any IT type mag!!

DigiMatt 20-11-2003 07:00 PM

Mate!! I'll buy 2 copies, one to read and one to keep in a air tight glass cage!! :D

Mark 20-11-2003 07:21 PM

Same goes here...

Fallenswordsman 20-11-2003 07:35 PM

Depends on the content. I haven't bought a CG magazine in a long time primarily because the price is so stupidly high and the contents of the UK magazines don't tend to offer me that much. The Japanese magazines have really got it right in my opinion. Some really great content (primarily organic modelling stuff which is where my main interests are) plus some top notch tutorials.

Fallenswordsman

Can you give us the names of these mags. Always looking for good tuts

Claudio 21-11-2003 12:01 AM

I will buy too, but how much is this &#@%^4 in dollars (I don't have the pound sing :p )

21-11-2003 12:33 AM

http://www.xe.com/ucc/ ;)

21-11-2003 12:33 AM

but if your lazy: $6.81 :p

Leovenous 21-11-2003 07:22 AM

That is not a bad price at all. Large run mags are expensive enough, so I am impressed you can come up with this number for a short run issue. (short as in, not many). What, do you print it in Scotland? :D

As far as it's value, yes that would depend on the content.

It might be cool.

keef 21-11-2003 08:44 AM

woof woof

Put me down for a copy. Do you plan to make it possible to pay by points??? Or would that be too complex?

Can't wait for the new SimplyPhotoshop site!!!

Keep smiling Kevin - its almost the weekend.......

Leovenous - It better be a good idea as you will be running the photoshop side of it ;)

I have just forgot to tell you about that small bit :D

keef I had a similar question at SM and Ill just paste me reply if that cool with you:

"unfortunatly this is a seperate venture...and as we are laying out a lot of money for the initial publishing then we will need to seperate it from lifetime / points membership"

-------------------------------------

but saying that keef, its only at an early stage so anything is possible..

Leovenous 21-11-2003 09:20 AM

Kevin: I am well aware of that. I just left that part out. ;)

And I am still a 3D guru and a SimplyLightwave addict.

Fallenswordsman 21-11-2003 09:37 AM

@ puREp3s+

My magazine of choice is Computer Graphics World although it helps if you know a bit of Japanese...

Their recentish Lightwave Bible was pretty good!

Leovenous 22-11-2003 08:30 AM

You know, I just looked at the Maya thread for this: It makes us look like we don't know what a forum is.

All's well that ends well, though, I guess. :D

voices3d 22-11-2003 01:30 PM

hey, i would bye it! :) sounds very nice indeed

Forum -- err... doesn't that mean that there's more than threeum and less than fiveum ??? So who says we don't know what forum is! :p

Leovenous 22-11-2003 09:35 PM

Mark:

Your right if you want to be technical about it, but surely you know what I mean!

:( ;)

22-11-2003 11:37 PM

Leovenous, mark is just trying to defend slw ... but deep down he knows the truth :D

Mark 23-11-2003 01:59 PM

*sob* You're right. I do know the truth. I've just been too afraid to admit it but ... we're not worthy ... we're not worthy ... we're scum ... .... ... ...

SLAYER 23-11-2003 08:27 PM

I'd buy it if LW is divided evenly bwtween MAYA.

If the Simply LW and simply MAYA sites are any indication as to what this magazine will be like, then I will probably not buy.

What I mean is, that based off of the monthly newsletter I receive from Simply 3D, and when I browse the sites, the MAYA one receives much, much, more attention than this one. At least that is how it appears to me.

If the magazine is based from this, it looks like it would be about 20% LW and 80% MAYA.

Not trying to sound harsh, and maybe I am wrong, but that is how it appears to me.

23-11-2003 08:29 PM

Thats because theres more happening at maya... more tutorials are released, more people in the challenges etc etc...

We are trying hard to even things out but it takes time.. Maya has been up longer then lw site also

R4s1n 02-12-2003 03:09 PM

i am willing to buy the mag but i have a question about it, how do we pay for mag?
is it like through a credit card or something?

Thanx

H.I.O.M 02-12-2003 03:19 PM

I would by it...I have no idea how much £4 is compared to swe Kroners, but I would sure by it.

quaoar 02-12-2003 04:26 PM

I'm in.... :D

illustrativ 02-12-2003 06:01 PM

this is a great idea, i will buy it once its out. I dont really care if there is more Maya than Lightwave as long as the magazine has good interviews and tips as i dont care what app the person is using i care more about there technique and how they got where they are.

R4s1n 02-12-2003 07:56 PM

well does anybody know the way that we are going to pay for it????

Claudio 03-12-2003 12:21 AM

Should be the same way we buy points... I guess....

How soon we going to get it?

Leovenous 03-12-2003 01:06 AM

Sergi, it will probably be like buying points, only you are buying an issue. Weather they take anything else, who knows. It is trickier because it's an international thing. I would doubt they would take a check (or as they would say, cheque :) ) but they may take money orders. At least that is how many of my international e-bay customers pay me.

Kev is the last word on these things. ;)

03-12-2003 02:24 AM

it would actually be like buyin anything on the net..it would be seperate to our VIP area

you would just buy and get it sent to you :)

in any case its the DVDS first so...look out for them around xmas time, then we will deal with the mag after

Erwin 03-12-2003 02:53 AM

Kev, any hints regarding the DVD?

03-12-2003 08:17 AM

Claudio 12-01-2004 03:56 AM

I never heard more words about the Magazine :(

Any one could tell me what is going on?

bjørn 14-01-2004 12:27 PM

Yess! Me too got to have it. I reacon it's good old SimplyLW class.

Sir_Pro_View 14-01-2004 05:00 PM

The prices seems fair. I just have one question.. out of these say 35 pages.. How much of that is going towards advertising? And if you are going to have advertising.. how much is an ad going to run for?

leroy3rd 14-01-2004 05:25 PM

The idea of this magazine is causing me to grin uncontrollably... you can count me in, I'll buy a copy as soon as it's available (any chance of pre-ordering?).
