Shark W.I.P.
Here is a shark I started last night. No mouth work yet. The left image is from Modeler, the right is a quick test with a simple texture.
Awsome model man...looks great...I'm looking forward to see the final result..
Definitely looking forward to this one. Any plans to animate him?
yep, it will be animated.
Great!...looking forward even more now :D
You won't have to wait very long. The project is due the first week of March so I'll have it going shortly.
Excellent! Good to see this kind of thing getting modelled.
yummy
I love sharks.. totally cool my friend |
Underwater scenes is one of those things that is really hard to get right. Easy to screw up, but hard to get right. Pixar managed it (after around 12 months research) in finding Nemo, but still ... not the easiest environment to get just right...
All the more rewarding IMHO.
Here is the shark after some texturing. The 2 on the right had some post work done in After Effects. The shark was getting too close to the camera in Layout so I had to quit for the evening. The particles in the water are simple Hypervoxels.
"yummy I love sharks.."
lol...do you eat sharks or they eat you ? :D |
Excellent visuals Cory.
Always have been fascinated by sharks!
Also can't wait for the animation :) |
Very Nice,,,, i love them,, teeth..... Snap, Snap... :)
Lots of little things changed - the shape of the front fins, the shape of the mouth, the shape of the teeth as well as the second row added, overall width of the shark has been decreased. It is also rigged for animation now.
Very nice! I love the picture on the bottom. Gives the shark that menacing surrounding :)
Have you modeled the jaw separate from the body?
When a shark opens it's mouth, the jaw shifts forward and it's lips peel back. Jaw Shifting It's a shame I can't find better pictures to illustrate it. It's not nessecary if you haven't modeled the shark for this already, but if you did, it would give your final animation much more realism. |
I made the shark in 3 layers. Body, lower jaw, and upper jaw. I didn't make the wrinkle geometry though since the shots won't need it and my time table is too tight. I have made a ton of mistakes on this one and I would like to build another one with more detail (like Rob Pauza did on Newtek's board if you saw it). I have about 15 minutes of reference video I keep open while I working on this, including some pretty nasty attacks on fish bait showing the shifted jaws. Scary fish!
Totally awsome work....
love the lighting btw....is it G2? |
Nope, that is just simple Lightwave lighting in these last shots.
Really...care to explain how?...I've done alot of underwater scenes but I never seem to get the lighting right...
have you tried overcaster® - its a great plug from ekki over at 3dfightclub.com.
great sharky! demm duum |
Well I got a big problem, I don't have internet at home so it's a little diffacult getting the plugins to my machine......that's why I want to know how he did it with just simple lighting...
Here is the just of the lighting:
1 - make some kind of random texture map in Photoshop. An easy way is to do a cloud effect on an empty image. Adjust the levels to increase contrast. 2 - Set your scene background to a VERY dark blue. 3 - Set your ambient light to blue and drop it down to say 5%. 4 - Set your 1 light to spotlight with a projection image of your cloud image. Turn on Volumetrics and adjust with Viper. 5 - Add a simple fog to the scene and adjust it in the camera view with openGL fog turned on. |
H.I.O.M - its under 1meg. ekkis plug pack - google it mate!
Here is a rough cut of the video, including the animation of the shark if anyone is interested. The first 12 seconds or so are the shark. The file is about 4 meg.

Nice movie m8y
 |
very nice :D
i think though that the movements when it turns are a bit too rigid... sharks are really graceful (in a shark-type way :P) and dont sorta make small little jerks liek that to corner... |
that looks great, the underwater effect looks very very good!!!
great job |

Actually, that movement came from watching a lot of shark video and they did make that quick turn several times. The trickiest part was getting the tail moving properly. I watched the video backwards in slow-motion to pick up the movements. |
very...very....very cool!
hmmm ok i musta been watching other sharks or something :P
