Screenwriter: suggestions

Hey guys,

I’ve been working on this character now for about 5 or 6 hours, I think the head is at a good stage now to start tweaking features to give him exaggerated personality.

My intention for this character is to be a failed screenwriter in a short animated piece, so I want him to look and act eccentric. The person this is based on is such a person so no problems with the movement, however I’m aiming at a hyper real look so I feel I need to make him look realer than real if that makes any sense?

So I was hoping for some suggestions, crits, or tips on going about this!

Also I’m having trouble with the nose, I’m not sure whether you can see it in the screen shot but his nostril is pinching on either edges.

Thanks

Thats awsome wadis, coming along nicely the back of the head is looking a bit wonky you might want to tweak that a bit

Wadis 22-04-2004 04:27 AM

heres an update

I'm just positioning my texture at the moment so only the colour channel is applied, and i havn't edited the images yet

oh and i decided to stay realistic and stylise in post

Wadis 28-04-2004 01:43 AM

AWESOME!!! Little question. What is that little thing on the guys eyelid. Probably something to do with the stretching of the lower resolution textures. So I guess that will probably get fixed. Also the eye has too much specularity....it needs to look wetter instead. Other that, OUTSTANDING JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to be this good.

Wadis 28-04-2004 03:04 AM

thanks for the comments colto,

that bump on the eyelid is due to the incomplete bump map

Keep at it, once you figure out the basics theres no limit to what you can do!

Hey Wadis...

This Looks like a Really Gud character!!! I am gonna keep watching this thread!:D

bullet_evader 03-05-2004 11:19 AM

its looking very good, but the chin looks to " plastic" to me!!!

Fallenswordsman 03-05-2004 07:45 PM

This is coming along very nicely. Sorry to point out a modelling niggle at this stage in the game but to me, his mouth doesn't look quite wide enough and the corners of the mouth look fairly angular. But the texturing looks like its coming along great guns. Top job!

Wadis 04-05-2004 11:22 PM

I know about the mouth, it's been giving me the biggest headache!

the problem is that it's pinching in the corners

if anyone has any tips on fixing this problem that would be much appriciated

Fallenswordsman 05-05-2004 09:16 PM

I'll try and put together a quick brief on how I do mouths tomorrow - can't promise that this will fix it but at least you can see another approach :)

Wadis 06-05-2004 04:13 AM

Hey heres the new texture;

Having problems with the specularity at the moment, I've tried diffrent light rigs and this render is 1 area key light and 1 spot fill light with shadows off. Any sugggestions on good lighting riggs would be appriciated! However i think the spec map needs tweaking.

Does anyone know some good texture settings to make my eyes more wet looking? The settings i have now are:

eyeball
no spec

cornea
spec - 200
Gloss - 70
frefract - 1.3

Wadis - hopefully this will be of some help:

I decided to bung it in a new thread so your own thread doesn't get cluttered up with tonnes of not-too-interesting images :)

Wadis 10-05-2004 03:39 AM

Thanks Fallenswordsman that tut helped heaps

Wadis 19-05-2004 01:40 AM

I think the mouth is fixed, added a row of polys at the edge of the mouth.

What do you guys think?

neone 19-05-2004 02:29 PM

very nice work

Fallenswordsman 19-05-2004 07:25 PM

I think this is looking very nice indeed! This is shaping up to be one heck of a cool head model - I love the texture you've got on the eyes too

bullet_evader 19-05-2004 07:36 PM

i think the mouth is good now!!love the texture. only one little critic: the lips have the same texture as the skin, maybe give the lips a "lip texture"!!

keep on going!!!

Wadis 19-05-2004 11:25 PM

yes i am yet to texture the lips. one thing on a very long "things to do list"!

Wadis 20-05-2004 04:33 AM

I've been working on the body for a while now, i think it's at a respectable level heres a pic

bullet_evader 20-05-2004 08:56 AM

sorry...i cant see the picture!! its a red cross!!

Wadis 25-05-2004 05:57 AM

there it should veiw now

colto 25-05-2004 09:27 PM

Great body, texture on the eyes is much better now!

Wadis 25-05-2004 11:59 PM

Heres my attempt at the hand. check it!

Wot you guys think?

http://www32.brinkster.com/wadis/HandNoTex.jpg

colto 26-05-2004 12:37 AM

can you provide a top view. It kinda looks like the thumb is almost as long as the forefinger, but that may just be the angle of the camera.

Wadis 26-05-2004 01:01 AM

yep. However the mesh is very buggy at the moment

http://www32.brinkster.com/wadis/handbot.jpg
http://www32.brinkster.com/wadis/handtop.jpg

Fallenswordsman 26-05-2004 06:25 AM

Hands are always tricky to do - so this isn't looking too bad at the moment. You already mentioned yourself that you thought the mesh was buggy so I'm going to lay back on the crits for now until you manage to fix it as I don't think its entirely fair to crit something known to be buggy.

colto 26-05-2004 10:47 AM

Ah, the scaling is actually really good. Hands are really annoying to do.

Wadis 27-05-2004 12:30 AM

ya agree muchly

Wadis 20-07-2004 04:37 AM

Hey Guys

Sorry havn't posted in a while, I had to publish a DVD for mid year assessment.

Anywho heres an update on my chrarcter

The hands are respectable now, I totally restarted, what do ya think?
http://www32.brinkster.com/wadis/HandsFin.jpg
http://www32.brinkster.com/wadis/HughBodyDone.jpg

I've also rigged the chrarcter and he moves!! However having dramas with weightmaps. I'll post something soon.

Shawry 21-07-2004 12:36 PM

Is it just me or do the new fingers look a little stubby? Nevermind, they still look great.
Lets get this fellow dressed, his 'bulge' is a bit disturbing :P

Fallenswordsman 21-07-2004 07:51 PM

Hands are terribly difficult to get right but these aren't too bad. Does he have finger nails at all? Slightly concerned about the lack of pelvic girdle or at least the suggestion of one, but you don't always see those anyway.

Wadis 21-07-2004 11:20 PM

he will i've been so busy trying to get his clothes working. I'm using motion designer and it's a real pain in the ass. I saw the capabilities of LW 8 yesterday and motion designer is so much simpler. boo hoo
