Aug/Sep - Norm - Kumar

Ok guess i am going with LW for one last time,,, hmm,,, next time i will try Maya or Max... Hope to learn more about UV stuff in this challenge...

My choice...
Combo of three dinos... Going for a reasonable look.

T-Rex with spikes of Stego,,,, running on the back,,,, slightly larger front legs,,, and Larger canie teeth like Sabre tooth... Shorter Tail and with the sikes on them...

Will post my concept soon.

Hi Kumar,

Mate just out of pure curiosity why would you choose Maya and max over lightwave? This is probably not the thread to ask this question.

I am keen to see the entries from the norm competitors. Good Luck!!

Sharp 05-08-2004 01:55 PM

to ozwolf. they have more some extra things then lightwave and seam pretty much better all but better usually means harder so im learning in lightwave first myself

anyway looking forward to it kumar great idea :)

Hehe,,, well ozwolf... Max,,, i have to pick up,,,, for job purposes,,, if i am going to make the transition soon. Hopefully i confirm things with the studio soon, I already have ver 5 with me, thanks to the ppl. As for Maya.. it attracts me slowly,,, because its like LW it contains things all under one hood. Have to agree with Sharp,,, there are things that will make you go wow,,, coool... Like for example,,, if you wanted to say do a UV map of a head in LW,,, man,, the steps you have to go through to get it right is
ARRRGG... ,, Unweld,,, morph,,,,,, flatten,,,,, planar UV,,,,,,layout,,,,,,,baking,,,,,,morph target,,,,,,,save transformed,,,,,merge points.
As for Maya,,, cut the model in half..... Map that,,,, enter into the editor and start to pull the points and adjust the map,,, Mirror, and flip the UVs,,, and sew them up.

Okok i know LW is good at texturing and all,,, but the abillity to handle the CVs without worriing about the model is a welcomed sight... I know there are plugins and all,,, but hey,,, maya has that built in,,, i can go on about cllusters, paint tools and bla bla bla... Even though i am a noob at Maya.

Ok thanks for the explanation, as a newbie modeller i am still learning about things such as uv mapping ect and my understanding of the more technical and advanced tools is limited so i guess as i get better i will have a better understanding. I have been lucky enough to try max, maya and lightwave and i must say max and maya are by no means user friendly to a newbie thus why i settled with lightwave.

But none the less i am very keen to see your entries progress.
Good Luck

bullet_evader 08-08-2004 01:44 PM

heej that looks good!! nice details!!!

i think it will look a bit better if you make the eyes smaller!!if you look to your reference picture you see that the t-rex had a very small eye!!! anyhow...looks great...keep on going

bullet_evader 09-08-2004 01:19 PM

i like it!!! great work!!!

kumar 09-08-2004 03:30 PM

Thanks JSprogg and bullet...

will be some time before i start on the textures... still have to finish up the model... and maybe do a little subd and then adding some fine details,,, or maybe the displacement way... Oh well see how it progresses.

Zeeman 09-08-2004 04:20 PM

good job there, Kumar! I think that it may just be the perspective, but the legs or feet may be a little small for a dino that size.

Fallenswordsman 09-08-2004 04:29 PM

I can always tell a great model when I start making noises of the model I'm looking at. For this one, I'm going "grarrg, gnash". (In other words, great model!)

kumar 10-08-2004 12:48 AM

Thanks guys, the feet,,, its the perspective thing... they look fine from the side view.

s2-speedy 10-08-2004 01:45 AM

YEH I LIKE. I WAS GUNA SAY THE SAME THING WOT ZEEMAN SED BOUT THE FEET, BUT U SED IT WAS A PERSPECTIVE THING SO.. LOOKIN GUD. KEEP IT UP.:)

sspikedudley 10-08-2004 09:57 AM

some good detail in the head bit i feel the front teeth are a little big radius wise if they were thinner and longer i think it would look better good work

ozwolf 18-08-2004 02:21 AM

any updates for us too look at?

kumar 18-08-2004 02:19 PM

Actually quite a lot,,, finished modelling and now finished laying out the UVs,,, my first attempt,,, at UVs,,, Arrrgh,,,, after a bump map,,, i will post some images. ;)

Pony 01-09-2004 01:55 PM

Well. its Kumar. cool work bud. Could use some more updates though. I like this.. looks meen, and even scaryer than the normal Trex. coolness.

kumar 12-09-2004 11:06 AM

hi there pony... sorry for the long time for a reply,,, was away with Max,,, and some changes... Sorry guys,, dont think i can finish this one... too busy with a lot of stuff.... Majorly doing architectural type stuff for commerical stuff.

Mark 12-09-2004 05:57 PM

Aww shucks Kumar. It's a shame that you can't complete on this challenge, but Real Life(tm) has to take precedence sometimes I guess :)

kumar 14-09-2004 02:28 AM

Guess you are right,,, and i am new to max... so i am real nervous,,,, and dont want to screw it up... hope i get more better at 3d as i go along..
