July/August Challenge Rules and Guidelines!

Lighting!

For this challenge, lighting, atmosphere, and mood are the main judging points. Texturing is not a requirement.

The theme of this challenge is "Fear and Loathing".

1) Show concept drawings! Show your progress!

2) BONUS goal(s): As a bonus goal, texture your scene.

3) Label your thread thusly:

July/Aug - Norm or Noob - Your name

Choose to classify yourself as a Normal or Noobie class entry. Whichever class you choose is the class your final submitted entry will compete against! A winner will be chosen from both classes.

4) Mods and Admins can enter, but are inelligible to win and do not count toward the Grand Prize consideration of 3 entries mentioned below. If a mod chooses to participate, choose "Mod" class rather than Norm or Noob.

5) If 3+ Normal entries and/or 3+ Newbie entries finish among the 3 Simply sites participating (SM, SL, SMax), a Grand Prize will be rewarded to the class! VIP point prizes will be awarded to both a Normal and/or Newbie winner, if the Grand Prize criteria of entries is not met for that class.

6) Final entries must be posted into a Final Entry thread that a mod will create in the last week of the challenge.

The due date of the challenge is August 31st!

Normal Grand Prize -

Wacom Intuos3 A4 Tablet!

Newbie Grand Prize -

any 2 DVD's from any Simply site!

And guess what? The minimum entry requirement is lowered to be 3 or more! This means at least 3 people need to FINISH the challenge to award the prize. Shouldn't be a problem. :)

Feel free to ask any questions here. The winners of the previous challenge will be posted as soon as the mod's judging completes.

sounds like an interesting challenge Mike!

So basically, we have to create some kind of a "scary" scene that we're afraid of?

mtmckinley 03-07-2005 11:00 PM

Not necessarily. Whatever the theme means to you. Scary, suspense, paranoia, whatever.

Fallenswordsman 07-07-2005 06:30 AM

Lighting? Noooooooo! I have difficulty enough buying the right kind of lightbulb from Robert Dyas (screwcap, bayonet cap, screwcap, bayonet cap - can't remember!) let alone lighting a scene. Should be an interesting challenge though - best of luck to all those who enter

you forgot to sticky this thread

edit: ok you got it now.

question about rules.

can you use other software in it like zbrush to make a normal map.

mtmckinley 11-07-2005 11:27 PM

for a normal map, specifically, yes, you can.

Hi, everyone this my first post here, this sounds like cool contest count me in. do I have to do any thing to regester?

mtmckinley 13-07-2005 06:48 PM

Just make yourself a thread in the challenge forum and get crackin' :)

CrazyMerlin 13-07-2005 08:34 PM

Hey guys, this will be my first pic on the site.

I do most of my progress work on paper, so do I have to scan and submit these, or can I just submit a couple of 'ideas' that lead to the final render?

thx!!

~~CM!

mike_heinz 13-07-2005 10:43 PM

hello,

is it a requirement that we show progress and stuff? i never make concept drawings, but would love to enter this contest...

mtmckinley 14-07-2005 05:14 AM

we understand not having a scanner or digital camera or something, so concepts aren't necessarily required, but we would prefer that progress be posted now and then.

Quick Question

I am new here. Is this for an animation or a single rendered frame?

Thanks
Tony B.

mtmckinley 14-07-2005 03:23 PM

single frame

DuoDreamer 14-07-2005 05:35 PM

What rules are there regarding use of characters? Must we create totally unique characters for this scene, or can we model well-known characters?

Is there a specific resolution for our final rendering?

Also, are we allowed any post-processing effects, tweaks, etc?

mtmckinley 14-07-2005 05:50 PM

It's preferred that the work be original, but if you want to make Mario squaring off with Sonic or something, that's fine with me. Don't forget, lighting, atmosphere, and mood are the main judging points. And the big goal is for you to end up with a nice portfolio piece. :)

there is no specific resolution, but we do ask that if it's over 640x480, to please host the image yourself as opposed to attaching it to the forum, for bandwidth reasons.

Minor post tweaking is ok.

lwwiz 15-07-2005 08:11 PM

MOOD?

mtmckinley 16-07-2005 12:10 AM

the main judging criteria... lighting, atmosphere, and mood. Whatever the theme means to you, go for it.

pianoman 29-08-2005 04:56 AM

are we allowed to use lightwave content, you know the stuff that loads on with the program?

sandfish 30-08-2005 01:29 PM

hello
i understand that the final entry must be posted before 1st of september ....but what time zone ?

mtmckinley 31-08-2005 02:01 PM

All work is expected to be done by you and not using presets or anything like that.

Because of the international aspect of this challenge, the challenge will officially close when I wake up tomorrow morning and close it. So, I imagine you can expect it to close between 7-8 am USA Central time. I recomend getting your entries in before that, just in case.

After the challenge closes, we'll hopefully have a new one up the next day while the mods all vote to determine the winner! The voting usually takes about a week to get everyone.

Patience, grasshoppah!
