Animation Project: Beasties Ltd.

1 Attachment(s)
Hey folks,

Finally decided to kick myself up the arse and get a move on with my main project for uni - figured starting a thread would force me to do some work so here it is. I'm working on the environment at the moment as my character modelling skills (what little I have) appear to have abandoned me for the moment.
This is what I've got so far - all the action will take place in the upper part of a family home. I'll explain the story etc later on when I can be arsed! C&C welcome as usual

davie563 31-01-2006 06:53 PM

looks pretty good.

Need more stuff to comment thou.

KrisYoung1980 31-01-2006 06:57 PM

Sorry mate, we aren't all modelling machines like you - it takes me a while :p

davie563 31-01-2006 08:31 PM

lol, stop the excuses :p

i cant wait to see more, i remember u tell me the overall story, cant wait to see some close up's of those rooms, will there be an exterior ?

JohnD5000 01-02-2006 08:09 AM

Yep looks good.
But isn't this your already existing thread for this project?

KrisYoung1980 01-02-2006 10:26 AM

It was until I abandoned the model as a steaming pile of out of date mince so I started a new one, is that ok with you?

davie563 01-02-2006 01:44 PM

lol, what side of the bed have u been waking up on lately :)

Cheer UP !! Grumpy

Well sure it is. Doesn't affect me, just means you got more work to do!

I'll bare that in mind...

Small update on the environment - more or less finished the structural work, next up: ornamentation and random junk. Already loosing the will again though, might move on to characters for the moment instead.

davie563 01-02-2006 03:39 PM

nice.... not sure about the green hall, but im liking the pink room..

Can we some bigger renders

Fallenswordsman 01-02-2006 03:48 PM

Its looking pretty good so far - the modelling is sound although the colour scheme might be a bit too loud or powerful at the moment - tune into one of those home deco programmes if you have Sky and maybe get some ideas from there - so long as you don't start adopting the mannerisms and dress style of Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen :)

JohnD5000 01-02-2006 07:16 PM

Yeah, the colour scheme and wallpaper reminds me of the Futurama episode, "Roswell That Ends Well" (The one where they go back in time to the 50's) in the scene where Fry is in bed with his grandmother. I'll maybe take some screen shots later and post them to show what I mean. But only if I can be bothered.

One more thing, shouldn't the wall sockets be on the skirting boards? I know mine are but maybe some aren't.

Fallenswordsman 01-02-2006 07:27 PM

@JohnD - wall sockets aren't necessarily on the skirts - mine aren't and at work we seem to have them fitted by a cross eyed electrician who put them pretty much anywhere he saw fit.

Yeah it was just a note, that's why I said "maybe some aren't." It was just something that stood out to me as I'm used to them being on the skirting boards (except for in kitchens where they tend to be higher up).
And that episode of Futurama? (It won an Emmy for "Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming Less Than One Hour)" so maybe not that bad a colour scheme):

Peter Murphy 03-02-2006 04:20 AM

Na, my sockets are above the skirting board. Just depends where you live. I for one like your colour scheme, dont let these dipshits tell you any less. I've been in houses where the wallpapering is similar so it does follow taste of many people. Your room lighting is nicely done, and modeling is excellent too. Nice and flush.

The style will go really well with your characters. Thats one thing that some people dont considder. If you make a completely realistic scene then your characters have to follow that and suit it too.

Keep it up. :)

JohnD5000 03-02-2006 04:37 AM

What's with the sucking up Pete? you after something? ;)
(That goes with all the posts ya just made)

KrisYoung1980 03-02-2006 09:19 AM

Can we please keep comments in this thread on topic please, its choked with nonsense as it is.

Ok, decided that the reason the hall was too in yer face was because of the amount of dark stripey bits so I decide to make the dado follow the floor instead of being level, think it looks a bit better now...

Started working on the little girl - Suzie - thats going to be one of the two main characters, not sure if im going to use the detached eyelid system or not at the moment, they're just there so I can get an idea of what she'll look like with eyes...

Decided to keep the body of the old Noogle (2nd main character) from the previous thread and just rework the head instead, a little happier with this one and I can't really be bothered doing another attempt so I'll just try to improve the look with texturing...

Larger render of Suzies room, need to do something to soften the shadows being cast by the shades, cant turn them off as I need them to block the light, might have to use a spotlight array instead of a point light....
Those of you who have shuffled through the models on the Lightwave disc might recognise the horse, modified slightly and turned into a rocking-horse. I might model one myself if I have the time, not sure if there's any point though.

JohnD5000 03-02-2006 04:11 PM

Lookin good man. I thought you'd be wanting more shadows in the scene with there being a monster thingy in there, for what I get from your work, but then I'm not totally familiar with your story.
The reflection in the mirror loks a bit odd but then that could be the angle.

davie563 04-02-2006 02:03 AM

im really likin the pink room, has a nice glow about it, whats up with the spot-light hitting the ground, seems really square'ey

KrisYoung1980 04-02-2006 02:04 AM

Thats what I was talking about with the shadows, its not a spotlight, its a pointlight within a lightshade, will probably have to sub-patch it, but trying to see what I can get away with 1st

davie563 04-02-2006 02:06 AM

ohh, other than that the room is very well modelled, looks very clean, maybe 2 clean. This is a wee girls room after all, lets see some homework jotters and pencils cases on the unit and on the ground, maybe a school back under the bed and a dolls house at the foot of her bed, these would help make the room more personal, as apposed to the showroom feel it has,

Keep it comin

KrisYoung1980 04-02-2006 10:53 AM

Like I said previously, I've still to do all the ornamentation for the whole upper floor, but I'm taking a break from environmental modelling to work on the characters. Dolls house is a good idea though, hadn't thought of that. The room can't be messy as the mother is very strict and wouldn't allow her daughter to make a mess.

Peter Murphy 05-02-2006 01:32 AM

I'm not suckig up ya big ditty thing John. A little bit of praise goes a long way.

Really like your Devil, he looks cool as. However i suggest getting a cuddly and maybe a dolls house in your little girls room. I know your doing little things later, so just thought i'd mention it now. Otherwise its looking great.

Louie 05-02-2006 02:52 AM

Anim

Looking good guys....
I've had to re-think my project, so I'm back to my original C4 idea which will keep the Uni staff happy!!!!
I'm in week 3 of the new Anim job so there's not been much progress with C4 and the art stuff.
Hopefully see all your up-to-date work back at uni....

Louie

Fallenswordsman 05-02-2006 07:18 AM

Lil' Suzy's hair is looking a bit flat at the moment - I don't know if this is the look you're going for or not, but maybe the pigtail sections at least could do with a bit more body?
Building modelling is nice and neat though - I like the photo of the grandparents at the top of the stairs. Its a nice touch.

Thanks for the comments Fallenswordsman - The hair isn't finished yet, just put that there to get an idea of what she'll look like. Not sure if its the best way to go about it but hey ho....
Have been working on Noogles rig today which obviously means its time for Night Fever once again...

Fallenswordsman 08-02-2006 07:25 AM

Nice work with the rigging! Time to don the BeeGees large horrible sunglasses! The project looks like its going well so far.

KrisYoung1980 08-02-2006 09:31 AM

lol, cheers! I'd agree that it was going quite well if it wasn't for the fact that I''ve only got 12 weeks to model 2 whole characters, do all the morphs for everyone, finish modelling the environment, model an entire new environment, work out the sfx, record the audio, animate 4 minutes worth of story, render, and post production (with another 3 modules worth of coursework on top of that!)... Why do I want to try and make a career out of this again??:headbang:
....ok, rant over - should all come together so long as I stick to a fairly intense schedule.

davie563 08-02-2006 04:22 PM

hi Kris, im loving the wee devil. i know this is ur style but it might be nice to see the devil with smaller feet. i always feel with feet that size is makes the charater very clumsey and cumbersome, u would expect a wee cheeky devil like that to be nimble and agile. i'll understand if u dont want to change it, its very much ur style.

I read that ur thing is 4min long, do u not think u might be aiming a bit to high in terms of length and will no doubt sacrafice quality for quantity. 4min of character anim is alot, u have certenly taken the pressure of me, i thought i had alot to worry about with a possible 90-100 sec's

The characters look good and the exterior is comin along great, id hate to see it rushed just to meet such a target. 30sec of quality animation is more valuable than 4min of average animation..

But i really hope u pull it off. Keep up the good work !!!

KrisYoung1980 08-02-2006 04:36 PM

Cheers Fraser - In the brief for the project it says that the animation is to be between 2 and 4 minutes in length. While the entire story will take about 4 - 4.5 minutes to play out, I've told John not to expect the entire story to be submitted - obviously if I think I can manage it I will, but if worst comes to worst I'll mock up various stills to tell the rest.

P.S. The feet stay! :p

Quick test to check the styles match and the scales are ok...

davie563 10-02-2006 05:50 PM

lol !

Looking cool. he looks like such a wee cheeky guy, i wouldnt turn my back on him for a sec.... :D

Have u considered giving the character a slight glow, if he is playing the bad guy, like u se in cartoons over each shoulder, it might help make him look mystical, and a red glow, not much would help make him very evil :p Just an idea

LOL or give him th devil fork thingy !! cant remeber the name

Looking gd ! Keep it comin !!

KrisYoung1980 10-02-2006 05:58 PM

thats a good idea, but maybe a bit much for the whole animation, I might try and see what he looks like glowing when he appears and disappears, fading it off after a few secs or so...

davie563 10-02-2006 06:10 PM

cool, its funny u mentioned that, if he is goin to fade out and stuff, then here is a link to a tut that might if adapted could make him disapear in style :p

Some Particle fade teck :p

KrisYoung1980 10-02-2006 07:23 PM

Those are both pretty cool effects, but not really appropriate for what im doing, cheers though - I've got him shrinking to nothing with a pop and spray of particles, its all automated with expressions...

davie563 10-02-2006 07:25 PM

any chance of seeing a few still of the progress, like a we storyboard of the effect ?
