Ill jus say im goin for a more cartoon looking / humourous feel for this comp. so not too serious.

:)

Finally got the drawing down :) here is my character - hes a rhino and the sport he will be playin is dodgeball . i got a few ideas for final pose :-

A) Ball in the groin :)

B) Rhino running away with loads of balls comin at him with a scared look on his face.

OR

C) rhino sitting down after a game with bruises and bandages and a burst ball on his horn.

and another...

TowerFan 08-11-2007 04:58 AM

Hey Speedy! Great concept art, love it! Good start on the model as well. My vote is for number 3. A rhino that's all beat up is a cool idea. Can't wait to see the finals.

Fallenswordsman 08-11-2007 02:43 PM

They don't call you Speedy for nothing. Nice concept and some very fast modelling on this one so far.

Mark 08-11-2007 11:12 PM

I'll see Mike's awesome and raise you a superb!!! ;)

Absolutely love the concept ... although it worries me the thought processes to get a Rhino associated with Dodgeball :eeek2:

Can't wait to see the finished work ... good luck!

s2-speedy 08-11-2007 11:18 PM

cheers for the comments guys :) much appericated.

TowerFan - glad you like it :) i may try all 3 poses and then decide which 1 to go for after, seeing as we have until Feb i should have enough time to do all 3 - then pick a favourite.

Fallenswordsman - hehe yeh i was pretty quick with that head so far, everything seemed to be goin right only took bout 25 mins or so for the modelling - thats quick for me :D still needs alot of work thou.

More progress to come....when ive done somemore

s2-speedy 08-11-2007 11:25 PM

haha HEY mark :D cheers im amazed everyone likes it so far.

Cant let the modelling let me down now. ill try my best.

The thought behind it was, firstly i wanted to do something fun and humourous so i thought Dodgeball would be cool. Then i wanted to do an animal rather than another human figure for once and i wanted it to be a big animal so i thought of elephants, hippos and rhinos. kinda thought these big animals would be more funny playing dodgeball as they are big and slow so really have no chance of actually dodging the ball :D and when i drew up a rhino from some reference he just looked dumb and i liked it.

only had a little bit of time on it tonight so not done alot, just the 2nd horn and had a go at the ears which were tough at first - not sure if i still happy with them though. C & C welcome.

Mark 10-11-2007 12:24 PM

Personally I think the ears look a bit on the large side. [Was always under the impression that Rhinos have comically small ears for the size of their head]... apart from that though, can't crit anything else...

s2-speedy 10-11-2007 05:13 PM

yeh i also thought the same mark, when the model is jus polygons (before subpatched) the ears looked way too big but when smoothed they shrink a little but mayb still too big. i have shrunk them down a little now and attached them to the head. but on sum rhino pics i saw this 1 rhino had huge ears - duno if it was a different kinda rhino or not but ill post image later. :) thanks neways.

s2-speedy 10-11-2007 07:23 PM

heres a pic of rhino ears mark

http://www.awf.org/files/3782_file_rhinos_artwolfe.jpg

bigger than i intially thought, although i kinda put em in the wrong place lol i put them more on top than on the side. Mine did look a little strange thou, mayb i need 2 re-shape the head a little. :)

Mark 12-11-2007 11:14 AM

Oh yes ... I see what you mean. You could move them right out [kinda Shrek style] for added comedy value ....

s2-speedy 12-11-2007 02:30 PM

yeh i shall try that mark, see how it looks. in the meantime heres a litle more progress on the head. :) C&C welcome.

started on the body and attached the head to it. still needs work.
quick question - should i model the clothes or do u think it would b easier 2 paint them on in a texture seeing as they are like skin tight cuz he so big??

jocco 13-11-2007 05:53 AM

I don't know about the clothes, but your WIP is very nice. Realy like it ! Keep going

Mark 13-11-2007 06:39 AM

Up to you, but I'd be tempted to paint them on ... go for that cartoony look ...

s2-speedy 13-11-2007 01:34 PM

cheers jocco and mark.

I may try painting them on and see how it looks if im not happy ill model them. Not very good at texturing so thats goin to be the challenging part. >_<

Mark 15-11-2007 01:06 PM

Coming along nicely there Speedy...

I've just been lurking over at SM taking a look at the entries. There's some good ones appearing over there [Funky Bunnies entry is certainly one to watch], but I reckon you're up there with the best of 'em...

s2-speedy 16-11-2007 05:41 AM

cheers mark :D

yeh i have been lookin over there now n then, some nice work comin along. i agree funkybunnies is good, his work always is - specially the pirate entry which he won in the summer.Gsters is comin along nicely too. its a pity i dont have Z-brush i could make my rhino alot better then, but i do wot i can wiv jus lightwave and see wot happens. wish more lightwavers took part thou. :)

acid44 17-11-2007 03:34 AM

looks sweet speedy id say to paint the clothes on and go for the toony look like mark said but its upto you really you may even get extra cred if you model them...

if i could figure out anything in lw id enter as a lightwave user but i opened modeler and looked around and i cant figure out a damn thin, its changed alot in the past 3 years...:ninja:

Mark 17-11-2007 05:17 AM

Lol ... it's not changed that much ... go into your keyboard and menu layouts and load up the 7.5 style menus if it's looking that alien... :D

s2-speedy 20-11-2007 07:21 AM

cheers acid44 - my 1st attempt shall be to paint them on but as im not too good with texturing, ill have to see how that goes, if that dont look right ill model them. :D thnks for comments.

Fallenswordsman 09-12-2007 07:51 AM

Model faster!

s2-speedy 10-12-2007 12:20 AM

lol :) i can model fairly quickly, i jus not worked on it much lately, but i done the clothes - i modelled them jus 4got to show updates. deffinetly some comin later.

JohnD5000 10-12-2007 08:31 AM

Nice one. Reminds me of the film, "Bedknobs and Broomsticks."
http://ichabodisitchy.files.wordpres...6/06/34bed.jpg
I personaly think modeling the clothes would look better than texturing them on. Though if you bump map it well it should look ok.
You could do one big scene with a whole team of rhinos and use all your ideas for poses together. :D

s2-speedy 10-12-2007 09:17 AM

OMG. :O that rhino looks alot like mine, and i never seen this b4. i modelled his clothes jus like his wiv a vest n shorts. updates on the way. cheers 4 that John. :D

i promised sum progress, here it is. it still needs work but i jus thought id show what i got so far.

JohnD5000 12-12-2007 11:36 AM

looking good. I see you decided to model the clothes. Good choice! I think you should either make the top of his hump a bit wider or bring the vest strap in a bit closer to his skin as it doesn't look as if it's sittng right from your top right image.

s2-speedy 22-12-2007 08:04 AM

Thanks JohnD - yeh i decide to model the clothes, i was still workin on it but its sorted now and i began sum texturing test but wasnt 2 happy with it. but will post sum progress after new years out the way.

Happy new Year Lightwavers :)

stu

Fallenswordsman 22-12-2007 12:11 PM
