Ave- winter challenge

1 Attachment(s)
hey chaps

I think I may have a crack at this winter challenge- yeah I know this is going to be an extremely late entry- but what da heck, I may be able to get something done if I start straight away.....and I cant let only one person from SL enter- that just would be right... I got yr back speedy ;)

I had this thought right in the beginning, but it was a bit too similar to Jocco's, so now that he is no longer entering I think I should go for it

ok Im creating a cartoon at the moment, and thought this would be a great place to start and slot it in when its done...... so the thought is this-in the cartoon the guys switch on the tv and rocky 10 is showing, and old sylvester is like this 90 year old senile geriatric, still thinking he can kick @ss on the canvas, for this challenge I want to do a movie poster with him poised like one of those 1930 boxers, his trunks pulled up to his arm pits, hunched back, balding gray hair etc

I did a quick sylvester, and put a quick crumple texture on him, (which iv included below), but I didnt like the way it was turning out, I couldnt get the eyes right and he still looked too young, so iv abandoned that one, but I thought I would include it so you can see I am doing something :)

so now I think im going to rather just do an old dude instead, no resemblance to sylvester and go for a way more cartoony look.

some of the challenges I may face is that my computer is as old as the 90 year old sylvester- its wooden and has like a crank handle on the side of it- ok not that bad, but im going to have to keep it at quite a low polly count, so I cant do crowds- ill have to do him just posing or something

ok well ill keep yu updated

here is the initial design- and incase u were wondering my backdrops are always very simple, because I dont really like drawing, I prefer to start simple and then manipulate the object till it feels right....

s2-speedy 21-01-2008 03:23 AM

hey hey ave :) glad 2 have sum backup. better late than never i say :D

lovin ur idea, that sly stalone looks really good :) looks jus like him mayb more wrinkles and grey/ bald hair wud make him more old looking, but seein as u startin wiv a new guy, i like the look of him too.

Its great too come and check my thread and see a new challenger :) hopefully we get a lightwave win in feb :D

All the best with this. :) ill b checkin bk regularly - good luck

Ave 21-01-2008 03:59 AM

thanks hey I really appreciate your support, im actually quite excited to get into this- and I agree- we have to get a win for SL!!!!!!- maya's going down!!!!

:attn:

and not just to give a complement for a complement, but your work is freeeeking excellent- im loving what you doing with this challenge- cant wait to see the end result......

hmmmmm i was looking at my first model, and am now not too sure which one to go for- im wondering if I should give sly another shot, I think s2-speedy may be right, I may be able to get him looking a bit older, with some basic stuff like gray hair etc, and it may be funnier if you can still recognize him.......

s2-speedy 21-01-2008 05:13 PM

Thanks 4 the complement mate, appreicate it :)

Both of your models r looking really good. Hard to chose between the two. i think they both would b fun to model and both would have a funny outcome at the end as they both old. i was goin to say if you had time you could model them both like Old Rocky Vs Old guy.

But if ur just goin for 1, i think id give Rocky ago. It seems to be a bit more funnier as he dont know when to give up, you could jus imagine him fighting all his life - i mean the rocky balboa movie, how old is he in that 60 odd or somthin hahaha

But its your challenge so its up to you, i think they both b fun either way. :D

Ave 21-01-2008 05:40 PM

bwaaaahahahahahaha , the dudes an energizer bunny-

thats actually quite a cool idea, but instead of the opponent, something that may look funny is to make the old man his coach- standing there holding those "not too sure what they called" 2 small round hand held boxing pads things, that they always use in practice-haha these two geriatrics, the old coach lying at a propped up 45 degree angle, the oxygen over his mouth, still with the coach whistle around his neck, giving sly a lesson :-) I can even make the coach into an old mr T- "hit em bags sucker fool"

thanks once again for the input, i really appreciate it

Here is where I am up to, mapped out the basic shape of the body, need to still do a LOT of refining, add some thin muscle definition, that kind of stuff.....

Mark 22-01-2008 12:17 AM

Looking good so far. Definitely recognisable as sly...

s2-speedy 22-01-2008 08:09 PM

Looking great ave, the head is spot on.
as u say the body still needs work, prob sum muscle deffention but not too much as hes a old codger now :) lol but i duno how he wud stand up wiv those legs hehe, he'll need a zimmerframe.

I thought bout havin the 2nd guy as his trainer too after i had already posted, he looks like he cud b a trainer. :D keep it up mate. :)

Ave 22-01-2008 09:10 PM

thanks guys, im glad you can see a bit of sly in him, I dont think it would work as well if its just some random character- just hope that isnt lost as i make him older

yeah Im not happy with the body, iv put a lot more work into it last night, and its looking better, but im battling- I havent really done a body before, and its working against me :-\ the shoulders are really hassling me

hahahahahahahaha bro that is such an excellent idea- a zimmerframe!!! Im going to use that one thanks man

update- its starting to get there, but like I said in the last post the body is quite difficult......iv ordered todd grimes body modeling dvd, but thats not going to arrive for a few weeks, so that doesnt help :-(

Im going to have red a white checked briefs sticking out the top of his pants there in the front

his chin looks a bit funny and I havent finished his arms or legs yet, but I was wondering why I bothered modeling feet and hands, since they hidden - had a duh moment there

s2-speedy 24-01-2008 03:16 PM

oh yeh that was sumin i meant 2 say bout the Not modelin parts u wont b able 2 see such as feet n hands lol Looking really good thou at the moe, gloves looks sweet.

I got the whole Todd grimes Collection, its really good and a great help with modeling, riggin and animation.

keep it up bud

Ave 25-01-2008 10:35 PM

Yeah iv been drooling over the tutorials for about 6 months now- good to have finaly bought one- my 20+ hour long Larry shultz character animation dvd also just arrived, which looks freekin awesome- then theres the caveman tut, fishy tut......... I think im a tutorial junkie :-\ now its just to find the time to go through all of them haha

man Iv spent about 3 days solid trying to get the hair to look decent, and all of it looks trash..... does anyone have any tips/ideas for me on how to get decent looking hair- iv tried sas as well as modeled hair, but none of it looks good, so iv scraped it all & going to start again- for the 500 time :headbang:

oh yeah I modeled his boots and the inside of the mouth, but there isnt too much to show so ill post images again a bit later on when iv made some progress

s2-speedy 26-01-2008 09:34 PM

the inner mouth is always good 2 model if u plan on animating him or pose him with mouth open but no need 4 feet unless he takin his boots off lol

Cant help u wiv the hair mate sorry. the only hair i ever did was modeled and it wasnt that good. glad my character doesnt have any lol.

good luck thou

Ave 27-01-2008 05:22 AM

im going to use him in an animation so im going to need him to talk, but I wont do all the morphs until the end -if there is any time left in this challenge......

yeah I gave him the chop, so he is now officially feetless and can go on disability grant, but i was quite sad to see them off- they were the nicest looking feet iv done so far, oh well thats Murphy's law

haha glad to see im not the only one- his hair looked like some kind of funky mushroom type growth which isnt very sly like- well not at this stage of his life anyway..... :-)

wasnt it you that during the last challenge came across a problem in rigging where your character contorted out of shape?? I came across a tutorial the other day that deals with that issue- I can give you the url, unless of course you figured it out....

Mark 27-01-2008 06:16 AM

For hair, try taking a look at the techniques used in the 'Full tilt' short at the menithings website: http://www.menithings.com/manual/Til...php?action=how

s2-speedy 27-01-2008 06:48 AM

Hey Ave,

yeah it was me that had the problem with the skeleton, the riggin went well but when i opened up a saved scene, the model was all over the place. I thought sum1 planted a bomb in there over night, lol i opened up the scene and my characters bodyparts were completed mashed and all over the place. hehe

i did manage to sort the problem but I 4got how i fixed it now lol think it was fallenswordsman who helped me out.

Ave 27-01-2008 10:34 AM

that happened to me- its quite frustrating, the little lightwave pixies did it I tell you :-)

anyway the lecturer dealt with it on one of the tutorials on Ikboost at http://ikboost.com/?cat=1

really really really good if you want to learn to rig and animate using ikboost-

hey mark thanks for the link- thats exactly what i was looking for- its going to help a lot!!

Ok here is where I am up to...... just started doing some texturing, the hair is a quick default sas thing going there, im gonna to shape it a little better, but I wanted to see how it would look with some old wild hair- so u get the general picture, besides for that UV mapping is a #$@@#$!%^ insert what ever you want there

:ninja:

sack man 4 days left, I dont rate im going to make it, but iv got my coffee, red bull, multivitamins and a fluffy blue wiry thing- im not sure what thats doing on my desk.......

but here goes!!!

Fallenswordsman 04-02-2008 12:50 PM

Certainly is looking good from the model's perspective (not in the "Hey I find this guy attractive" perspective!)

I think you've done extraordinarily well considering the amount of time you've had - best of luck with the final push

jocco 04-02-2008 05:00 PM

I like it ! Good luck Ave !

Ave 04-02-2008 06:15 PM

Fallenswordsman: hahahahahaha glad to hear u dont find him attractive in that way- when I model a kate beckinsdale ill let u no

thanks for the support- I appreciate it

hey jocco!! long time, havent seen u around the forum for quite some time- thanks also 4 the support.......

JohnD5000 05-02-2008 04:55 AM

Looking good.

Like the texturing and old fashioned style glasses.

Are you texturing the shorts? Make them a bit browny and old looking I think would look good. A few stains or something.

Ave 05-02-2008 12:44 PM

thanks bro, yeah im giving him red and blue checked boxers sticking out his pants, and I had originally planed to give him normal boxing shorts over that, but old brown hession cloth might be very funny- like those old 1930 fighters......... hahaha

A bit of both. Just some random stains that no one will ever know what they are or would ever want to know. :D

Mark 06-02-2008 08:05 AM

Ewwwww http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sick/sick0021.gif

Ave 06-02-2008 02:01 PM

hahahahahaha u dudes are not well!!

I textured his shorts, that old brown cloth was a good idea, its looking sweet- altho no weird stains this time- he must have had his colostomy bag plugged in ;)

well im almost finished, got a few more details to put in, gotta do the background still, and a few more textures...... then its over the top into no mans land!!! 2 days left!!!!!!!!!!

gster123 08-02-2008 12:09 PM

JohnD5000 08-02-2008 11:00 PM

Looks like you can post again. I'd like to see your final image. I'm ot a member in the Maya forum and I'm too tired right now to go sign up.

Ave 09-02-2008 12:06 PM

haha I didnt even notice that it was opened again until I read your post, but its there if you want to check it out- I wish I had a bit more time to get a good background, and mess around with different poses and stuff, but im going to carry on working on it in my spare time and get some animations going

TowerFan 09-02-2008 12:15 PM

Hey Ave, great work! Especially since you started so late!

Great concept, very funny. Really good job on his face, it's obviously Sly. Keep up the great work and good luck in the comp!!

Ave 10-02-2008 03:23 AM

Towerfan: thanks man!!!! haha Im now trying to catch up on some seriously missed sleep......... but thanks for the compliments, Im glad u can still see its him, iv been getting a lot of woody allen chirps lately haha guess its the glasses

Mark: wow that would be great if we got somewhere in the comp- im frustrated with maya always getting the glory!! thanks for the message, I appreciate it...

Speedy: thanks, good luck also, you definately have a strong entry there!! thanks for the support-i needed it- some of the people down at simply maya are roff, check what a hard time they gave us while trying to post our entries hahaha dont post on our forum you lightwave scum we will flick tiny pieces of fluff at you, take that, and that..... good luck hey

s2-speedy 10-02-2008 09:19 AM

did they really say all that ave? lol i must of missed that all i saw was CLOSE THIS THREAD, but gster was helpful towards us. I didnt take much notice of them, but it would be nice 4 a lightwave win :D

Ave 10-02-2008 11:49 AM

haha no im just improvising there, and teasing them a little bit, but im sure if mtmkinsley didnt intervene it would have gotten there :)
yeah gster's a cool dude, even came thru form simplymaya to say well done...... thats decent of him......

man I just want them to open the polls and start the judging now, im getting itchy here...........:attn:
