character: head

well here is my second attempt at a head... i really need some lighting tips/help to create a light setup that will make a convincing photorealistic look.

i also need help on those eyes! i just cant get them to look convincing!

Hi

Hi Syrogen

There is a great head tut in the book INSIDE LIGHTWAVE 7 by Dan Ablan,
I am not very good at modeling heads myself:p,
but texturing the head could take you half way in making it look realistic.

Regards,

Dae:)

philip 16-04-2003 10:19 AM

I'll go over the texturing part in the basic head tutorial.
But on the model I might suggest to sharpen his jawline a bit and maybe have a second look at the lips and nose. There's nothing really *wrong* about your model, only I think some more detail and characterization would do wonders here.

Very good start!

RiGLEY 16-04-2003 02:37 PM

yes it looks VERY good to me too ! i guess you didn't use radiosity (or HDRI lightning) if you want a quick and easy way to lit your model, consider using a HDR image as an environment.
did you use sss ? it seems to me, that you did.
good work !

syrogen 16-04-2003 10:30 PM

dea: thanks :) ive been planning to get that book, and also this lightwave 7 lighting book

philip: yeah, i plan to give him some sort of facial expression, just for more character.

RiGLEY: hmm, ive tried radiosity and hdri... but when i try to use them both together this is what i get

!! freaky aint it? my sample rate is at 4x12 and shading noise reduction is also checked... :(

Ugh... looks like a really bad case of exzcema... :)

syrogen 16-04-2003 10:38 PM

hehe, all the fancy face creams in the world would never itch his itch

philip 16-04-2003 11:21 PM

go to the image editor and apply a blur filter to the HDRI, render again
(make it real blurry, like size set to 10 or something)

syrogen 16-04-2003 11:28 PM

hmm... still a no-go, doesnt work for me. i blurred horizontally and vertically at size 10 and it still was very... grainy

dugg 17-04-2003 12:17 AM

I did a model of my son based on the Inside LW7 book and at one point it looked really similar to your 'over-exposed' version, all I can remember is that I found the solution somewhere in the middle between too much texture and looking like a porcelain doll. I hope you have the ambient light off or virtually off.
I hate to tell you to twiddle with the knobs... but that's what I do. Good luck

Looking good

The model is really coming together, keep at it.

2nd attempt!!!!!

looks damn good for 2 attempts!!

awesome dude

quaoar 22-04-2003 06:37 PM

Awesome model so far.... I feel that some of the HDRI's lighting is too intense... Have you taken your light intensity down to 0-5% ? I find it works wonders.... http://forum.simplylightwave.com/sho...5&pagenumber=2 the last image on the page has a light intesity of 0 and I think it's on the right track....

syrogen 23-04-2003 04:54 AM

thanks for your help everyone!

http://www.syrogen.com/misc/head25u12.jpg

but i still need help with those eyeballs! i just cant get em right :(

Mark 23-04-2003 07:14 AM

Check out the head modelling tutorial in the Inside Lightwave book. There's an excellent guide to creating realistic looking eyes in there...

syrogen 23-04-2003 02:04 PM

doh, i really need to get that book. i have the basic structure of the eye (cronea, iris) and yes i did make the iris flat, but i guess ill just have to fiddle with it

Mark 23-04-2003 05:52 PM

The tutorial in the Inside LW book suggests the following steps:
 • Make the eye a perfect sphere. (Make sure that the sphere is rotated so that the 3 point polys face out along the Z axis)
 • Clone the sphere and smooth scale it up slightly to make the cornea
 • Select the first two bands of polygons in the cornea and smooth shift them with an offset of zero.
 • Now move them out slightly on the Z axis and size them down to about 80% of the original.
 • Delselect the polys and Knife through the third row back to add definition to the bump in the cornea.
 • To make the iris, merge the first two bands of polygons on the inner sphere.
 • Perform a series of 5/6 bevels to get a nice smooth inset curve on the iris.
 • Delete the final polygon (pupil)
 • Make a perfectly black disc inside the eyeball behind the pupil and size it up so that you can't see behind it when looking at acute angles to the pupil - this helps to add some depth to centre of the eye.

Hope this helps

syrogen 25-04-2003 12:06 AM

thanks mark! i updated the eyes and the light setup

Mark 25-04-2003 12:15 AM

Really starting to come together now...

I'd suggest maybe a little less reflectance on the cornea and maybe a very slight bump (try crumple or dented) on there too to make the eyes look a little less glassy...

One more comment about the eyes. The whites of the eyes look a bit too white, unnaturally white and too uniform in color. I'm not sure how to tell you how to fix it, since you are further along than I could ever hope to be. Just a suggestion. But overall, it looks very good. Love the improvment in the pupil and iris.

I agree, if you look closely at your own eyes in a mirror, you'll see that at the corners of our eyes blend from white to redish/pink from the blood vessels in our eyes.
You can easily mimic that with a simple texture map.
Here's an example.
I'm sure someone probably has a better way of explaining it.

By the way your eyes put mine to shame. Great job!

syrogen 26-04-2003 06:50 AM

thanks people! ive updated the eyes once again :P

Excellent - looking much better.

quaoar 26-04-2003 04:40 PM

This just keeps getting better!..The eyes seem a bit luminous.. the eye in shadow seems as bright as the one in light....But the eyes are much better!!!!keep it up.

syrogen 26-04-2003 05:26 PM

thanks! the eyes seem luminous becuase i have a light only affecting the eyes. ill fix it :P

woo, what a week. thanks mark for pushing me over the edge... i was really considering buying inside lw7, and you just made me do it! after reading chapter 10, i saw some flaws in my character, so its time to tweak the modeling and retexture, and relight my image. back to square one (almost ;) )

Mark 29-04-2003 07:26 AM

Syrogen - no problem. I find the inside LW book invaluable.
