My Favorite Toy Challenge - s2-speedy

Okay im going to enter.

Funnily enough, i was clearing my loft / Attic out the other day and came accorss aload of old toys so have recently seen them and had a blast from the past.

So im just saving my space and tempted to go with the ninja turtles...although not 100% sure yet. May change the toy yet...my sega mega drive was a favourite of mine, so was He-man, ghostbusters, mask, Manta Force...and aload more. But I think ill go with the turtles for now and maybe even the turtle van. :)

Should be fun. Good Luck to all who enter. :D

s2-speedy 04-05-2011 08:08 AM

Thanks Guys. Im just gathering reference off the net....as just the other week i cleared my attic out and got rid of the actual turtle toys i used to play with. All those years in the attic doing nothing and when I actually need them....I throw them out lol...Oh well, Least we have the internet! :)

bullet1968 06-05-2011 10:12 AM

So will begin modelling at the weeekend. Ive just been collecting reference and doing a technical drawing just so I get everything in place for when coming to Model. Heres the drawing below with different viewports.

Cheers,

Nice Work

Did you Draw them yourself?

s2-speedy 06-05-2011 08:42 PM

Thanks arma. Yeh i drew them myself but had to look @ the model to get it all right. Then touched it up in photoshop. :)

sandman300 07-05-2011 02:19 AM

Cool, Looking forward to the competition, just like the old days.

Although I was around for the turtle toys, I was a bit too old for them myself. Although I preferred the Eastman & Laird comic version over the cartoon.:D

Thanks Bullet, But I should be okay now. I collected a fair bit of reference in the week so might have enough. Ill let you know if I do later on though.

I've started the modelling now... began with the head. Pretty basic at the moe.

s2-speedy 07-05-2011 09:51 PM

Sandman - I aim to model the newer versions of the toys which were based more on the look of the comic turtles. I like the look of these alot better than the cartoon versions. :)

Johnny9ball 09-05-2011 12:33 PM

Looks like a great start and that drawing is top notch.

s2-speedy 09-05-2011 01:08 PM

Thanks Johnny :D

I will try and get more modelling done tonight. Hopefully I can finish the head if I have enough time.

I've spent the last few days working on the arm. I still cant help but feel it looks really strange. Especially the forearm part, but ive been going off my reference and its like that. Maybe it also looks strange as its a toy arm with joints and stuff. I thought id post it anyway even though im not particually happy with this part.

bullet1968 19-05-2011 10:56 PM

The forearm does seem a little bulky mate?? still if the ref is like that....leave it or alter it a tad...good progress mate

cheers bullet

s2-speedy 20-05-2011 08:01 AM

Hi Bullet, Thanks for the comment. Yeah the forearm and the lower part on the legs seem bulker than the biceps and thighs which is incorrect in the anatomy world. But as its a turtle and not a human, Im going to leave it for now and see how it looks later on. I did tweak it a little last night though and re did the bands that go round the wrists and elbows. I'll also post an image of the toy so everyone can see what its like.

Cheers,

Just thought id show how it all looks when put together. I re-did the bands around the arms.

Mark 20-05-2011 05:51 PM

Looking good there Speedy ... with it all together, the arm looks fine.

s2-speedy 24-05-2011 08:22 AM

Thanks Mark, You're right. :) It all starts to look how it should when its all come together. Just gota get those legs done and extras.

Cheers,

Heres some progress on the legs. Just have extras and weapons to model now then its onto texturing and rigging :D

bullet1968 27-05-2011 12:47 AM

I think I'm done with the modelling phase for now on the main body...Just have the weapons to model now and backgrounds or stands if I can fit them in in time. I did a texture test over the weekend too, will post that later. Tomorrow i have a day off work so will spend most the day rigging him. :)

s2-speedy 31-05-2011 12:12 AM

P.S - thanks Bullet! :D

So on my day off I have created the full skeleton and assigned the weight maps to each bone. I may have more bones than neccassary as the toy is limited in its movements but I like to have more control. I have also created the weapons for Donatello (staff) Leonardo (swords) and Rahael (twin sai) Just need to do Michaelangelo's Nunchucks and texture them.

Here are a few skin tests. The paint work on these are not fully smooth on the skin. I was just doing a quick test on these heads for colours and texture. there's a slight bump to it. Will show the toy close up later on.

bullet1968 06-06-2011 12:30 AM

LOL looks cool mate...the tests look a little bumpy, dont have them to 'furry' looking as they will look like Kermit. Good progress mate!!

cheers bullet

s2-speedy 06-06-2011 08:00 AM

Thanks Bullet. Thats a fair comment, they are looking a bit furry looking now you mention it. As i say, its just a quick test, so will do some more later and hope to get it looking right.

Cheers.

Finally modelled the weapons...

s2-speedy 07-06-2011 08:25 PM

1 Attachment(s)
The weapons are not to scale by the way...

And seeing as I rigged him, I had to test the bones with the weight maps to make sure everything moved as its suppose to. So I posed him and did a render.
