constrain to curve problem

this object needs to follow this rail. i have a matching curve in there and the object will follow it(right now i was trying to manually keyframe it around as you can see). i can seem to do any editing with it attached to the path. it needs to stop at mid curve for some other actions. i notice that the graph editor shows a straight line.if i add any keyframes to it(the same on H B P),it blows it off the path. can you give me a direction?
