I had a few minutes to work some more on my entry...
here is what I came up with...

Nice! I like the reflections.
Will you be animating the legs in and out?

3dchip 05-02-2003 08:02 PM

Thanks Kvaalen... Yes, I think the legs are begging to be animated...I made sure there was enough clearance for the gear to fold up and into the ship.

Kvaalen 05-02-2003 08:07 PM

Cool!
Something else that will be interesting would be to make it walk!
I have made a 4 legged spider-bot sort of thing walk, I wonder how fun it'll be to animate a tri-legged thing :D.

great one! 30 of them attacking London and you would have your entry for the monthly challenge as well :D

very nice render (the secont image) :)

Well, if I am going to attack anyone (be it London or somewhere else), I guess we'll be needing a weapon...

philip 05-02-2003 10:42 PM

what? not a giant bowling ball? you disappoint me. :P

the laser is looking great.

RiGLEY 05-02-2003 10:56 PM

:)

Looks good, you can see some polygons on the left side that aren't smooth enough.

Let me guess how you did the laser:
You made a rod, set it's luminosity up, udded a volumetric light and a lens flare.
Right? ;)

3dchip 05-02-2003 11:16 PM

Actually you are right...mostly... no volumetrics. I added a glow and then bloomed it to get the nice volume. I did notice that I should have added another small point light beside the leg that the laser passes by as there should be a glow on it as well.

As for the polys, yep, I see em. Hmmm... without rebuilding, will a subdivide smooth this out?

philip 05-02-2003 11:18 PM

just set your render subpatch resolution higher in Layout... no smooth requirerd

Kvaalen 06-02-2003 12:01 AM

Either what Philip said, or else do subdevide and then choose metaform.

So I got it wrong with the volumetrics :( .
A little tip though, if you are going to apply a transparency to the laser (which I don't think it needs it but IF...), use a volumetric light cause the glow will hardly be visible.

3dchip 06-02-2003 12:06 AM

Of course I will have to take the laser OFF for the competition... that or provide a warning label regarding the fact that children can blow up their parents and or homes if they are not careful... oh and don't look directly into the laser. :)
