Ocean Waves and a Boat

OK. SO I did the stormy ocean video tutorial from this site, and it looks great. Now I need to make it look like a boat is actually moving across the water. I've tried using a motion texture for the object, but the movement seems to be random, and only works on one axis. HELP!!!

You should make a reference null for the whole boat if you have more than one layer. This way you won't have to alter each layer at one time.

Then for it to move with the water i would think that you have to do it frame by frame or something along those lines.

Im not familar with the ocean tutorial on this site, but heres what I do. Take the boat and parent it to a null. Then use the same displacement map that you are using for the ocean on the null.

This will cause the boat to ride on the surface and bob up and down with the waves. Works pretty good, but sometimes it takes some experimentation on where to place the boat initially.
