Cobe Telescope

The cobe telescope is some telescope I have to research for my space tech class, so I decided to make it in lightwave to have some cool pictures of it.

This is pretty much the sources images I had to use, there really wasn't that much out there. (Not exact source, I can't find it now, it's on my home computer, but they are kind of close)

I am really happy with the modeling, it's not really that great, but what I like about it is that I only spent 1 hour making this. So projects really make me happy because they give me an exact thing to do, while I have a deadline, so I don't think I'll make it too more detailed, because I also have to keep my render times low.

Far away view.

The top of it looks like I need to add more polygons, but I'm not going to, that is how it kind of looks, so i think i'll keep it like that.

From here I think I am going to make a really big earth and have it fly around it, but I don't know how it will work out with how lightwave might weird out having a HUGE sphere next to an itty bitty one that it's all about, i'll have to try it out when I get home, any tips if it's not going to work out easily?

Fun thing about this is just how easy it felt to model, I know it's not that great, but it was just so easy to make what I wanted to do, I was smiling ear to ear while modeling!

Good thing the last post uploaded before my computer crashed ( i love school computers:rolleyes: ).

I also started texturing, but I only spend about 5 min on it, so there is still a bit to do. The good thing though is that with low radiosity, these only take ~ 1 min a frame(800 * 600), so I could probley do animations with it.

Now a break from posting a ton in my own thread.

Looking good. Will look awesome once you get some textures on it.

As for the Earth, check out Dean Scott's Earth tute (it's the best one I've seen)

As for the size --- make the earth down to scale rather than full size. You can fake the distance by simply scaling the Camera lens in LW so it shouldn't give you too many rounding errors. The only thing to ensure is that your satellite doesn't cast a shadow on the earth...
