Decided that I would do some of the objects from Super Mario Brothers, to break up the frustration I am having with the Robot competition. At least this way I am still getting practice and learning. So here is the first one, mostly done. I have to get the key on the back created. After that it is all just a matter of getting the feet, key, to move to bring it to life.

just a tip, replace the background with an image through the image world plugin in the backdrop panel, try using some hdri image too.

if any of this went over your head let me know.

Thios is the final render for now. I was thinking about doing a real world scene when I finish all of the objects. I will look into using the links that you gave then.

I have a question about the cell shaded version
I flattened all of the layers so that it was a single object, but I still get (I think) too mush light source on the left side, its like the mushroom hood dosent even block it at all.

Edit: I realized that I didnt check raytrace shadows
