Cake Icing / Beading

I'm simply not sure how to approach this. I've modeled a wedding cake in an attempt to get across my idea to the cake designer for my wedding. It's not photo real or anything, but as I continued to work on it, I want to expand on the model to add it to my portfolio.

Something that is vexing me though is how to create what bakers call beading, the little curlies of icing that go around the top and bottom edges of each layer that help to make it look softer and balanced. Has anyone modeled anything like that? I guess it would be similar to adding details like caulking to a bathtub or welding to metallic objects, but I wouldn't know how to approach those either.

Any ideas?

here's the cake so far:

Use a spline to design your curly que, rail extrude it, then array it to get the number you want. Make sure you line up the start and end points so they line up wiht the array function. Or you could just do a spline for the whole thing.
