Sept/Oct Challenge Rules and Guidelines!

Sept/Oct Challenge!

Video Game Character!

For this challenge, choose a video game character from the early days of games (SNES, NES, Genesis, etc...) and redesign a modern version of them! It doesn't matter if your chosen character has been in a 3D game before!

1) Try to show a screenshot from the game you have chosen! Show concepts! Show progress! This proves that you have worked on the challenge during the challenge timeframe! Modeling AND texturing is required.

2) Your entry DOES NOT have to be a low-poly model, however, if you'd like to, your polycount could be, for example, approx. 3000 triangle polys, with your textures allowed to be up to 2 512x512s.

3) Label your thread thusly:

Sept/Oct - Norm or Noob - Your name

Choose to classify yourself as a Normal or Noobie class entry. Whichever class you choose is the class your final submitted entry will compete against! A winner will be chosen from both classes.

4) Mods and Admins can enter, but are inelligible to win. If a mod chooses to participate, choose "Mod" class rather than Norm or Noob.

5) Applicable 3D programs are: Lightwave, Maya, 3DS Max, and Zbrush (zbrush is allowed for the creation of displacement/normal maps and the like). Until we get a unified challenge forum, please post in the applicable Simply site.

6) All work must be done by the participant. All work must be done within the confines of the challenge dates and not before.

7) Try not to attach images to the forum that are larger than 640x480. Feel free to host larger images yourself.

8) Only one (1) entry per applicant. You can work on as many as you'd like but keep it all in one thread. Choose the one you want to enter as your final.

9) Final entries must be posted into a Final Entry thread that a mod will create in the last couple weeks of the challenge.

The due date of the challenge is approx. 7am Nov. 1st, USA Central time. Get it in before to make sure!

Awesome, I'd like to know who won the last challenge. There were some sweet entries, most of them a lot cooler than mine!
Anyway, this new challenge sounds really cool. I really enjoyed the previous challenge, it was the first one I have participated in. I'm very excited for this one.
My first thought for this challenge was Sonic, but then I realized that he is still in 3d games today, unfortunately:(... My other 2 thoughts were Pacman, and Vectorman (Sega Genesis). I'm not sure I could modify Pacman very much, so I might go with Vectorman. He is that guy that is made up of green balls.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone else!:attn:

the first character i thought of was one from Mortal Kombat Sega Genesis.... but it's in 3d already so :( Must get those brain cells working...

Sounds like a cool chalange. If I find the time to put something together I'll make an old character from the Ti99 called Shamus. For its time it was a realy cool game, it had the Alfred Hitchcock themesong always running in the background. ;) Shamus is the little white blocky shaped thing in the top middle of the pic.:p

too bad Pacman is already done in 3d :P

"Pong" might not exactly be a winning idea, but it would be easy - a couple of long boxes and a box for a ball.

Does anyone know if "Strider" has been done in 3D at all? I'm thinking along the lines of some of the old Capcom games at the moment but I know some may have moved across into 3D fighting games. Anyone know, for instance, if any of the "Final Fight" characters made it into 3D?

And what a time for my main PC to break down completely! ARRGH, I want to get going on this competition and my PC is dead!

mtmckinley 06-09-2005 11:53 AM

Don't forget, the challenge is NOT to recreate an old game icon, but to design a modern version. So, Pong, for example, could be taken to quite an extreme when designing a modern version of the game!

bullet_evader 06-09-2005 12:22 PM

Pong is already done in 3d! and it's not a character at all.

How vintage a game are we looking at here? Just asking as I don't want to end up choosing anything too modern that would be ineligable. I thought of Samurai Spirits but then remembered that it had been done in 3D already - same with King of Fighters.

But in general are we talking old as in Manic Miner, Yie Ar-Kung Fu old here or are we talking anything over ten years with sprite graphics?

Also - if a game has been turned into 3D but some characters didn't make the transition, does this mean that those characters can be entered for the competition?

Are you guys finding the "not made in 3D before" rule too constricting? Because you are putting your own spin on it anyway, so I might be able to forgo that part of the rules as long as your entry isn't too similar to the existing 3D models.

Fallenswordsman 06-09-2005 09:07 PM

I don't find the rule restricting personally as there are a huge amount of non-3D characters out there to choose from, but at the same time so many classics have been updated to 3D at some point - even the likes of Space Invaders and Ghosts and Goblins.

sandman300 07-09-2005 01:33 AM

I think the problem is that an amazing ammount of people don't know the difference between 3D and sprite. Characters in Gouls 'n' Ghosts and Super Gouls 'n' Ghosts are sprites. as far as I know there was never a 3D update.

Fallenswordsman 07-09-2005 06:24 AM

"Maximo" was meant to be Ghosts and Goblins or Ghouls and Ghosts brought up to date in 3D....

mtmckinley 08-09-2005 02:54 PM

Ok, consider the "not in 3D" rule null and void then. Sorry for the inconvience. But please ensure that you are putting your own spin on it! If it's too similar to existing designs, it won't be a winner!
