phil82 - My Favorite Toy Challenge

This will actually be my first posting here. I think this challenge is a great idea. As a kid I had all sorts of toys but legos were by far the favorites. I liked the Space Police series. I had these sets: I will probably try to model both of them if I have time.

ok, I figure the best way to do this is model each piece individually and then follow the set instructions and put it together. Here is the start of some of the parts.

Cool cool! More LEGO stuff. :D Looks good so far.

That's pretty much what I've done for mine, model all the pieces [or a batch there-of] then assemble.

Can I maybe suggest, UV'ing a single stud now and as you go copying and pasting that to build each new piece, it'll save collecting and UV'ing them all later, just to put the LEGO logo on the top of them.

Thanks, Yep, thats what I have done, the uv is in place, I will do the logo when the modeling is done. Here are some more renders of the pieces I have completed so far

Ok, here is some more progress. I started to separate the colors out and gave the green clear pieces a little transparency.

Hmmm, it looks like I forgot to put my username in the title of my thread. Would the forum editors kindly put my name in the title? I don't see any way of editing it myself, and I wouldn't want to get disqualified from the competition for something as silly as that. :D

Thanks

Done. Nice start too by the way.

Coming along nicely. I like the shader you've got on the trans-green bits.

Looking at the ref picture and comparing it to your model so far, it looks like you've got the stanchion pieces that the engines mount on rotated 90 degrees on pitch from what the ref shows.

Good Choice phil82 .............. Good Luck

Heres some more progress. And good eye on the reference photo. I changed the rotation of the black support pieces

Looking good ... although the red bricks look too luminescent and the green transparent bricks look far too dark (although that could just be the background...)

yep, you are right. Im just using the occlusion shader right now for my WIP renders. now that im done modeling, I will start tweaking the textures to get a more realistic look.

ey that's cool. nice progress

You green material is looking really good. I think you might need to get a stronger light, or one that's set to affect spec only, so you can punch up the spec highlights on the black parts a bit.
