W = Weight Map T = Texture Map M = Morph Map C = Vertex Color Map S = Selection Set

When you select them, you create a "New" map and then from there you have various options. Each one is different. Weight Map is for Animation or texturing purposes. You select Vertices and then select Weight Map to create a new weight map for those Vertices.

Texture Map gives you the options to lay out UV's within Lightwave. If you are just starting out, try fooling around with the Texture Map function and Selection Set functions.

With Selection Set you have to Select the Vertices you want to group and then create a new selection set. This is used for grouping Vertices together, not weld but to group them for a quick selection later on. It can also be used for Pinning purposes with Cloth but that can be explored later, after familiarizing yourself with the program.

Good luck! Let us know if you need more!
