Default rendering subpatched polygon edges

how can this render style be achieved in lightwave?

(i believe the above linked image was done in maya)

my question is specifically about the polygon edges. i know under object properties/edges you can use "other edges"... but i don't want the triangulation that happens with subpatched objects.

any tips/tricks, plugins?
