The number of splines you are using seems fine to me - concentrate on one part at a time just getting each component accurate before moving onto the next. The poly count all depends on how you patch things at the end of the day. But this looks okay so far. I think you'll only start running into difficulties when patching things - the making splines part is relatively easy.
