Well hi there ston,,, my thoughts on this are simple, well particals are the way to go,,, because when two of them come into contact they just combine.... As for spheres,,, when two of them come into contact they cut of,,, so you can see a seam or cut off line... You can try to animate a bump displacement texture on the surface when they come together to sort of fake the combination,, and position them in a way on goes into the other and forms a perfect sphere. There are things like morph targets to tell the objects what to morph to. Play around and see what you get. And work from there. You can play with the dissolve option,, if you want the object to turn into a liquid.
