If you look at the wireframe of your mesh, you'll see that each point is shared by a number of polygons (or patches in SubPatch mode). When you are working with subpatches, each shared polygon adds a certain weight to the point. The optimum number of these is four in Lightwave. More than that, and you start to notice artifacts in the model (such as curved areas showing distinct edges or points) around the area where the patches converge.
