I think the method used to model heads is really an individual decision. Some people swear blind by box modelling whilst others will construct heads point by point. If you look in the Modelling forum, I've laid out the method I use to construct lips and that's done using a point by point approach. Its best to try each approach so you figure out which is most suitable for you. Peter Duncan's creature feature tutorial is a nice introduction to box modelling - the first part of which is available free from this site. If you haven't done so already, I would encourage you to have a look at it.
This is a nice little character though. I think the nose is a little too sharp at the moment as are the eyebrow ridges plus you seem to have some folded area beneath the eyes which you might want to smooth out a bit, but overall he isn't looking too bad.
