For a similar effect in Lightwave you just reflect either a gradient or a photo on your text. In the image below it is just a simply text object created with the Logo button, then the edges were beveled with rounder.

In Layout a rectangle was added in front and facing the text. The Chrome.tga that is in the reflections folder was mapped to rectangle and Luminance was set to 100%, diffuse at 0%

Add spec, gloss, and reflection to the object.

On the Advanced tab, change the Reflection Options to 'Ray Tracing + Spherical'. Set the Reflection map to chrome.tga with blurring at 25%.

MAke sure under render options raytrace shadows and reflections is turned on.
