i usually use a light array or light dome, unfortunatly I know what you mean. just when you want to check out a model you have think all about setting up a whole scene lights, AA, radiosity, render options, man too much work.

so now I have Eki's plug pack, auto makes 6 different types of quick scenes all set up, pop your model in, and see it quick.
also uses spin lights, so no radosity, shorter renders. worth the $$$$

If you want a quick set up, let me know I can get you started. I can direct you to some tutes, or email one of my scenes.
