I don't have a tried and true method for setting up a camera.
In fact, the only thing that dictates where and how my camera is setup is the basics of composition.
Remember that you're not limited to rendering images in a 3:4 ratio. You can render at 400 x 2000 or 800 x 50 so don't cater to a monitor unless your making wallpaper.
Also, don't be afraid of overlapping shapes. There is nothing wrong when one object blocks a small portion of another or an object is slightly out of frame. Overlapping shapes create depth and lead the eye.
Do a search for painting composition on google. It should help you out.
