i would like to know how to do the greyscale map you are talking about.
dont know exactly what kind of texture methode you are using, but if you open your texture in photoshop you can make a black-white image of it ( this is also possible in lightwave ).
then open the surface editor and click on the t after the Bump setting. In the new window you can select your black-white image and when you are going to render you will see the result!!

don;t know if you understand me ( i hope you will )
but i am a little bit drunk at the moment so don;t shoot me if you dont understand me hehe
