In theory to light up the turrent with the flash, set up a few point lights around the turrent where you want the 'flash' to illuminate and set the light color to the flash, or variations thereof and activate intensity falloff and range. Might even want to make them volumetric with texture to simulate, I don't know, something, heat haze waste or whatever- cloudy stuff is cool even when it makes no sense. Then envelope their light intensity per light.

Or actually and more simply, a muzzle flash is nearly instantanious- there suddenly, really bright then gone, stick a spotlight or point light at the end of the muzzle but far enough away so the muzzle doesn't block all the light and envelope the intensity from 0% to the point of going off to maybe 500% for 10 frames then ramp down to 0% in another 5 frames or so.

Or mix the two ideas..
