Pen tool and spline tool have some difference, but I don't use either much so I can't help you there.

3DS SubD is, essentially, Meshsmooth stacked on top of an eMesh or ePoly. . .there are significant differences between 3DS and LW's SubD (LW's only works with tris or quads, for instance), but that's the basic idea.
