From my understanding of Multipass rendering the actual setup process is slower than a single pass render but the advantage is not having to re-render the entire animation again just because a single aspect such as Specularity is incorrect.

In effect you render out Specular / Shadow / Colour (Beuty) passes and possibly other then combine them in an external application.
