if you have a gap, just select the point closest to the y=0 and hit the 'v' key. This will allow you to specify 0 as the value and all selected points will be moved to 0.

you can also select polys on the upper body just above 0 and the lower body, just below 0, and apply the bridge tool which will as it says 'bridge' the gap.

this is not good on very complex objects as it adds a whole new load of polys.
