It depends on the situation. When you are using subpatch it is important to use 3 and 4 point polys because 5+ point polys will not subpatch correctly. Now in LW V9 you will have CatMullClark subpatching available and that fixes that problem. With CMC subpatching you can as many many point polygons and still subpatch correctly. For video games its important to use 3 point polygons so they render correctly because 3 point polygons cannot be non plainer. So in different situations its important to use 3 or 4 or 5+ point polygons.
