hi like fallenswordsman said, I would guess that the reason you got that wierd effect was that there was probably more than 1 point at the middle of the bottom row..... that normally causes the strange looking subpatched mesh. so I would guess that it wasnt so much about selecting it in clockwise or counterclockwise direction, but more to do with the fact that the stray point was deleated and the correct one selected the second time round......
