I have to agree with Mark for a lot of things - I will still come back to Lightwave every so often since it was the 3D app I started with, but the majority of my modelling these days is all Modo. I found myself getting up to speed a lot quicker with Modo than with other 3D apps since tools were easy enough to find and get to grips with and the tutorials from Luxology are pretty useful for getting you going in the first place. And yes, there is a sort of FPrime equivalent built in as well so you get all the fun of the on the fly rendering without having to shell out for an expensive plugin.
