twisteddragon: You are correct. When you have a subpatched poly bunted up directly against a non-subpatched poly, you will get strange artifacts from the smoothing. The trick is, you should model either entirely with subpatches or without.

There are, however, two ways you can go to get squarer edges on a subpatched object. These are:

1) Add geometry along the edges. This will have the effect of tightening the curves created at the edges of your model.

2) Modiy the subpatch weights over the points you want to tighten.

Again, as already mentioned - the McLaren (and the Strat tutorial) both deal with these methods somewhere along the line.
