you can also select multiple points, hit "i" and there will be numbers displayed in the 3D view just next to your vertices, so you can easily keep track of which point you are editing.
but LightWave wasn't LightWave if there was only one way to do things: when using the point tool to create points, you can hit n to bring up the numeric panel (or just keep it open at all times...) and enter the exact coordinates for your point. Ricghtclick in the viewport to create the next point and so on...
