Patching Question
Hi All,
This might be a dumb question but...I am doing the McLaren Tutorial and have progressed quite nicely (on tut17). One thing that has been bothering me since the beginning is the spline patching. When creating a spline patch how does one know how many Parrallel and Perpendicular polygons to create? Is there a trick or just plain experience/intuition. In the tutorial, I can see why a certain amount was used such as the top air intake, but in some other instances, I can hear Philipp counting how many he needs. In my mind, I'm going "Wow, how did he know that because the model is coming out so well." I've searched the web for answers, but nothing to tell me why. Thanks in advance. |

If I knew the answer to your question I would really like to help, but I have not done the tut or ever worked with splines... sorry

Actually when designing something on your own, you try to make the polys match the other polys created with other splines, so they line up with each other. It can be trial and error to get the right look. As your trying to find the number of polys that are enough to look smooth, but not so many to bog down rendering times.
One more thing, try to make your splines so you don't have a lot of three pointed polys, try to keep them four pointed if possible, they will match better. Silk |
