Default Robot Tutorial

Hi

I've just started on Lightwave and have downloaded the fantastic robot tutorial - I'm only halfway through the first part and have learnt so much!

One question - on creating part of the 'ear' - by extruding a 10 sided disc, then going into sudb mode - why does the doughnut shape appear as a 'negative'???

Compare the screenshot of my model with the smaller version from the tutorial.

Everything else in the render view appears full, apart from this part.

Im guessing there is some view setting, but I can't seem to find it in Display options.

What Am I doing wrong?

Cheers
Peepo

I've solved it!!! I extruded the shape the 'wrong' way - one way seems to give this weird effect, but the other way seems to work even though it's a planar shape to start with.

Do you always have to extrude in the direction of the normal?

Hey Peepo,

Great to hear that you worked everything out! I'm glad you also are enjoying the tutorial so far. When performing extrude on a single sided polygon, you always have to extrude away from the normal. If you extrude in the direction of the normal the shape will come out flipped, you can fix that by hitting the 'f' key.

Have a good one

Hey Cody,
Gonna purchase the Tutorial and looking forward to continue learning Lightwave, however I am using Version 8.5 and was wondering if there are any major differences between 9.6 and 8.5? Should I be able to complete most of the tutorial? I need to create a small type of character for a spot and needed some basic steps to follow. Also wondering, as a newcomer to 3D, do you know of any Websites or Forums where I can reach out to other Lightwave artists to hire on small 3D jobs? (titles, fx, products design, etc.). I can do the compositing, and am doing my best to learn 3D, but would prefer an experienced artist to speed things up. Thanks.

Hey Subpatch,

Everything covered in the tutorial is with LW native tools and should very easily transfer to 8.5. If you run into any problems please feel free to contact me and I'll be sure to help you out.

You could post a thread here about hiring LW artists for freelance work, or the Newtek forum, or Spinquad.

Have a good one!

Actually, in the lighting section you will not find a "dome" light, but you can achieve the same type of soft shadow using an "area" light instead.

Hey Cody

I just want to firstly thank you for this tut. My first one I did from the Simply Lightwave, and if this is the way things are going to go, I'm really looking forward to delving deeper into Lightwave.

You really got round to nicely explaining the stuff to a noob like me, so thanks for that. One thing that you could mention is when saving to use underscores for everything. I struggled for hours to figure out why Lightwave wouldn't open the saved file...

I've got a question regarding the finished product. I'm really pleased with the end result. I did mess up the belt bit, due to the action centre mouse/selection that I forgot to reset... Anyways, that's part of the learning process. My question though is regarding the amount of geometry in the shapes. If you look at the extrusions on the head, you can actually see the steps on the corners. How do I smoothen that out, or add more steps to the corners to make it appear smoother?

Thanks again

Hey Hanswors, glad you enjoyed the tutorial. I love doing my tutorials in a way that makes it possible for ANYONE, even someone who has never touched Lightwave, to be able to follow along and complete the project. Your robot is looking very nice! To smooth out the corners, you could either add more edge loops around the head, by selecting the loop and pressing "l". Or in layout, select the object and go to object properties by pressing "p" and change the render subpatch level to 5.
