Nope, subpatching everything is a bit of a misconception - some models lend themselves to subpatching, others don't. If we don't subpatch, we could probably create the whole object in much fewer polygons. The smoothing effect is something you define as an attribute of the surface. If you open up your surfaces window then there is a little tickbox toward the bottom that says "smoothing". So rather than having to create perfect rounded shapes with tonnes of polys, you can just turn on smoothing and do it in a lot less. (Hope to make another object later to demo this if I get time tonight)

Thanks for the answers!
I've made the charger-contact-thingy, but I didn't make the on/off button and the headphone-thing. Any tip on the lightning, shading, texturing stuff or how I could learn more about those things This is how it looks like, don't look at the mid-button it isn't round  : Last edited by aakashem; 03-10-2007 at 03:45 AM. |

Sorry for the lack of replies - this has probably been my worst week at work ever, so haven't really been in the mood for much. The models seem okay - but I'm sure we can spruse them up a little more - I'll try to find some time this weekend to see what else I may be able to suggest but unfortunately I'm away from my main computer right now so no Lightwave for me. Hopefully when I'm back to the main machine, we can look at the renders again. First thing I'd think of is at least adding a ground object.

Hmm, is it 'very' important to make an groundobject?
Is it like make a box and then flip the polys and insert the ipods into the box? Thanks for the help! |

Not even that ... just make a bloody big flat plane on the Y=0 axis.
Seriously, if you want to learn more ... get the Inside Lightwave book by Dan Ablan - it's the best guide you can get for general Lightwave learning. Once you've got that under your belt you can then start looking at more specialised and advanced stuff. |

You won't regret it ... generally the books tend to dive right in with a reasonably complex project ... you'll learn not only the tools, but valuable techniques as well. [IIRC the LW8 book dove straight into modelling a photoreal skyscraper]...

I know this is an old post but for anyone that stumbles upon it
[SIZE=3]Yes you can mix sub-patched and hard polys in the same object. As far as making the wheel on the Ipod why not make a disc and then stencil it on the original object that will help to reduce polys most of the time and you don't have to worry about the weird stuff that happens when making booleans.[SIZE=3]
