Nov/Dec - Wormtoungue - Matrix Style - Kvaalen - Norm

With so many people in this challenge I couldn't resist. :D
I can't promise many or fast updates, but it is two months long so it doesn't matter.

I'll be working on Wormtoungue (or Grima) and I don't know what item I'll make that characterizes him so I'd gladly hear some suggestions.

The style is sort of like Matrix style (I know they didn't make up the style, but I couldn't think of a better name for it) but it is going to be cartoonish.

I'm not using any reference from the movie.

I'm not very sure about the hair, everyone in middle earth seems to have long hair but his looks too good on him.

C&C are welcome! :)

Kvaalen 16-11-2003 06:15 PM

A little update... giving him a Matrix look.

Kvaalen 17-11-2003 11:42 AM

I'm afraid that this is going to be all the updates for this weekend.
But I'll work some more on it next weekend. :)

I'd love to hear any ideas or suggetions since I'm not sure what I should model next or if I should start texturing and rigging him.

BTW, does anyone know why the [IMG] code is off?!?

18-11-2003 10:11 AM

nice start mate and thx for entering this month

Mark 18-11-2003 01:33 PM

Do you have an overall script/flow for the animation yet as this might lend some thoughts on how to proceed.

If not, then I'd be tempted to drop in a quick rig and have a play with some ideas for animating and then sit back and see what comes to mind...

Kvaalen 18-11-2003 04:17 PM

Thanks guys! :)

Mark: We are supposed to create an animation? I din't know that. I don't have any script or idea yet. I guess I'll think of something before I continue then. :D

Mark 18-11-2003 06:48 PM

You don't have to create an animation just a still will do.

Quote:

from the Challenge guidelines
1) It can be high-res or game low-res. Textures, rigging, animation/posing, etc is NOT required.
Sorry if I worried you there ... my bad :o

Kvaalen 18-11-2003 07:11 PM

Ah! LOL! :D

I think it will be nice to have some sort of matrix style fighting, running or jumping over roof tops. :)

Next weekend I'll probably work on the cloth a little more so that it can be animated better and do some tweaking here and there. Then I'll rig it an all.

I'm very tempted to wait for [8] to do the rigging and cloth. :D
We'll see.
BTW, about rigging in [8]. There will be an option to save rigs and reuse them later on a different model.
You scale the rig to the right size and move the joints around. It'll keep all the expressions and everything. Sounds great!

Mark 19-11-2003 03:55 AM

Fantastic ... as long as it works ... and as long as L8 arrives this side of the next Millennium :D (counting the days...)

dae 19-11-2003 06:15 PM

does he shake alot

he kinda reminds me of Ozzy
any way cant wait to see him jumping over roof tops,
keep the updates coming.

Dae
:D

Kvaalen 22-11-2003 12:58 PM

Thanks! Now that you mention it I see that the lips really look like Ozzys. :D

Here an update, redid the boots (the ones before were temporarly taken from an older model just so he'll have some feet :) ), added gloves, tweaked his hair and face a bit.

http://mapage.noos.fr/samuelLK/Galle...gue/Wip_04.jpg

Unless someone has any better idea, I'm going to start rigging and texturing.

C&C are (ofcourse) welcome! :)

Kvaalen 23-11-2003 02:28 AM

I rigged the character (I know there are stil some minor deformation problems that will be fixed) and gave him some textures that still need tweaking.

The cloth deformations is just bones but since LW[8] is supposed to come out before the end of this challenge I thouhgt I'll try out the new dynamics on this, for the time being I'm leaving the cloth like this.

A couple views:

pretty neat. :) Right now, there's nothing that would really indicate that it's Wormtongue... hmm, what could signify him?

Kvaalen 24-11-2003 07:55 AM

I know... If you have any ideas please tell me. :)

PolarBear53 25-11-2003 12:00 AM

Well, in the movie, I think he has really really black hair, and extremely white skin, almost as though he is never in the light.

Also, doesn't he have a mole or wart somewhere on his face?

PolarBear53 25-11-2003 12:01 AM

O, and one eye is different than the other, if I have time i'll look(just bought the two towers extended edition!(extremly good)).

Try looking online for it.

Kvaalen 25-11-2003 07:58 AM

Thanks for the comments but if you notice I said in my first post that "I'm not using any reference from the movie."

That is part of the reason why I chose him, he's a character that has some importance but isn't shown too much in the movie.

For reference I use what the book says. I don't have time to look for it and quote it but all it says is that he has a wise pale face. Reading that for some reason made me think of the matrix style (don't ask me why). :)

dae 25-11-2003 05:39 PM

what about

What about a knife
because in the end of the third book he slices Saruman throat at bag end.

Yep, that is an idea. But I'm not sure it really characterizes him.

Can someone tell me if this can pass (A moderater or someone incharge) ? :)

Pony 26-11-2003 12:04 AM

you know the only defining thing about him would be his pose or way of moving.. maybe if you put him crouching buy a thrown, kinda patting the arm rest that would make a acceptible final render.

what do you think kvaalen ? mike ?

oh maybe his ring ?

Sounds like a good idea, but in the book he sits on the stairs in front of the thrown.

But his ring is never mentioned in the book (as far as I remember).

BTW, Welcome to SLW. :D

For some reason (that I don't know) I don't really like the way he came out. So if none of the options mentioned above suit then I won't mind creating a new character (after all it is a two month challenge). :)

Kvaalen 20-12-2003 03:49 PM

I have a question for anyone incharge...

I know it is a little late but I'd like to know if I can restart this challenge with a new topic. I don't know why but I don't like the wormtongue model I made and I can't think of any item that characterizes him. It's christmas now and LW [8] isn't out yet so I have some time. I have another idea that I think is much better.

So can I (please)?
I'd appriciate if someone could answer as soon as possible.

:)

mtmckinley 20-12-2003 10:57 PM

Sure, if you'd like. The deadline is still the same, though, I'm afraid. :) Good luck!

Kvaalen 21-12-2003 12:04 AM

Ok, great. thanks!

So how do I continue? Do I create a new thread or do I continue this one?

I've already started a little modeling.

Kvaalen 21-12-2003 10:21 AM

Well until someone answers how I proceed, I'll just post my progress of my next try here.

I'll be modeling a Nazguls' Flying Beast and the thing that characterizes him is the King of the Nazgul. I know you might think that it should be the opposite, but the Nazgul will only be a mass of cloth.

Now for the style... This is supposed to be nothing but funny! The style is Christmas/Santa. The beast will be red and green and funny looking even though he will look evil. And the Nazgul will be in red with white around the edges of his hood (looking like Santa), and there will be tons of presents behind. Don't you just love contrasts?

Now wish me good luck since it is almost the end of the challenge (9 days to go).

Here is my start, I've done a little more till now but I'll show it soon when it is a bit more complete.

Would you guys prefer if I attached the images since the IMG code has been turned of?

Well instead of asking for the IMG code to be turned on, I'll just attach the images.

Here is the body...

And an overall shot.
Note that he is supposed to have a bit of a cartoony aspect.. semi-cartoony. :)

Kvaalen 22-12-2003 03:12 AM

A couple more "detail" shots (not like there is lots of detail, but I'm sure you guys understand what I mean). :)

I think that will be all for today.

I'm not taking any reference from the movie, it's all from a sketch I made (but I took the cage around the eyes and the tongue ideas from the movie). I'd gladly post the sketch if I had a scanner but since I don't, I'll see if I can take a decent picture with my digital camera.

I started working a bit on the Witch King of the Nazgul himself.

It's still deeply in progress and needs more details, but comments are welcomed anyway. :)

As I said before, I don't have a scanner, but I took a picture with my digital camera of this quick sketch I made and am using as reference. Therefore you'll have to forgive the quality.

I know it is nothing special but I'm just posting it since it is requested by the rules and guidelines.

chrispo 22-12-2003 05:19 PM

You might be intrerested im my latest animation:

Last update for today...
Showing everything together and with color (that isn't final).
There is still some modeling left to do (especially the bottom part of the Nazgul) but I just wanted to give it colors. I don't think I'll be having very much time to work on it tomarrow so don't worry if there is no update. :)

kumar 23-12-2003 05:59 AM

Hi there chrispo,,,,,, Really nice animation, simple but funny characters. Really amazing, i was really amused.

Kvaalen 23-12-2003 09:36 AM

Ummm.... Chrispo started his own thread for comments, lets keep this one on topic:

http://forum.simplylightwave.com/sho...&threadid=1625

I haven't yet had the time to download it but I hope I will today. :)

chrispo 23-12-2003 01:22 PM

Cheers - Sorry for that lads, keep it there - I just thought you dont go to finished work ... :)

I'll start these challenges in the new year...

I started texturing. I think I'm finished with these parts (they look much better close up). Now what is left is to pose and texture the beast. Then I'll have to fix the horrible lighting. :)

voices3d 26-12-2003 10:25 AM

hehe--- love the textures

Kvaalen 27-12-2003 10:35 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Thanks voices. The problem is that the textures aren't very visible unless it is a closeup.

Well here is where I am now... I really don't like the beast texture, but I can't tell why. If anyone has any tips for it I'd really appriciate them.

I still have to change the neck and tail pose a bit and make a ton of presents behind the nazgul on the beast.

Since it is almost finished (looks like I'll finnish it on time even though I started late). I'd really like to hear comments from you guys on how to make it better.

Also do you guys think I should make the key light stonger.

BTW, the image looks much better if you are in a dark room. :)

Mark 28-12-2003 04:06 AM

I'd be tempted to turn the Nazgul Rider around slightly. It looks as if he's riding side saddle at present.

Kvaalen 28-12-2003 11:35 AM

Thanks for pointing it out.
I made him like that since I was trying to keep faithful to the sketch I made (you'll have to go back a page). IMO, it looks good in the sketch, but not in the 3D image.

I've changed the lighting a bit, the pose of the beast, and turned the Nazguls knees a little since my last update but I'm afraid I won't have time to turn himself around. That would mean having to redo the chains and a decent amount of the cloth too.

I won't be having time to work on this today, and I would like to finnish it by tomarrow so I can have it render a big render during the night.

BTW, could you guys please tell me if you think I should add presents on the back of the beast? (Like Santa Clause.)
I like the idea, but I can't think of anyway to put them there without it looking bad (wrecking the image).
